Frank Baum to foresee his seminal work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz being adapted into a Nintendo DS game, let alone a JRPG. Given the genre’s penchant for ragtag groups of travelers who meet by chance and miraculously share an overlapping goal, it’s really no wonder the property has now been extended in its next logical direction.

If this is meant to be an introduction to the role-playing game genre, then it is an unfortunate miss because the game manages to take all the fun out of RPGs.

Summary: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is a wonderfully creative take on the classic story that executes itself with ample amounts of charm and playability. The RPG elements might be a lighter than more seasoned players expect, and the touch screen exclusive controls seem slightly forced, but the game is a visually stunning, great sounding, and thoroughly enjoyable RPG experience that is a good time for older and younger players alike.

Conclusion: An unholy union or a match made in heaven? The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is a game that could have been better but for what it’s worth I think it is good. It could have used some more polishing in a few areas. I just think it was left like this due to the limitations on the Nintendo DS. Wizard of Oz and RPG fans should follow the yellow brick and pick up this title before it is too late.
Conclusion: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is everything I wouldn't have expected from an attempt at a Wizard of Oz JRPG: its presentation is nearly flawless, the touch screen only controls are very solid, and the battle mechanics are enjoyable and have enough subtle differences to make it feel different from other JRPGs on the market.
