The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road

Thunderbolt Games
26 January 2010
  • Excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century it must have been difficult for L. Frank Baum to foresee his seminal work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz being adapted into a Nintendo DS game, let alone a JRPG. Given the genre’s penchant for ragtag groups of travelers who meet by chance and miraculously share an overlapping goal, it’s really no wonder the property has now been extended in its next logical direction.

  • Excerpt: If it only had a brain... Xseed claims that their latest entry for the Nintendo DS, The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road (TWOBYBR) is “perfect for players of any skill level”. If this is meant to be an introduction to the role-playing game genre, then it is an unfortunate miss because the game manages to take all the fun out of RPGs.
  • Pros: Moving characters is easy with trackball, Preset battle configurations for new players, Reviving fallen characters is almost automatic, Confusing navigation, similar road names, Miserly on coins, Help menu is lacking, Enemy encounters are too frequent, Repetitive play and slow story

Review: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road (Nintendo DS)

Diehard GameFAN
12 November 2009
  • Summary: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is a wonderfully creative take on the classic story that executes itself with ample amounts of charm and playability. The RPG elements might be a lighter than more seasoned players expect, and the touch screen exclusive controls seem slightly forced, but the game is a visually stunning, great sounding, and thoroughly enjoyable RPG experience that is a good time for older and younger players alike.

Wizard of Oz, The: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road (DS)

The Review Busters
7 November 2009
  • Conclusion: An unholy union or a match made in heaven? The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is a game that could have been better but for what it’s worth I think it is good. It could have used some more polishing in a few areas. I just think it was left like this due to the limitations on the Nintendo DS. Wizard of Oz and RPG fans should follow the yellow brick and pick up this title before it is too late.

The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road

Digital Chumps
4 November 2009
  • Conclusion: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is everything I wouldn't have expected from an attempt at a Wizard of Oz JRPG: its presentation is nearly flawless, the touch screen only controls are very solid, and the battle mechanics are enjoyable and have enough subtle differences to make it feel different from other JRPGs on the market.

  • Excerpt: There were countless reasons why I loved the last great hardware effort from Sega (the Dreamcast, of course), but somewhere at the top of that list was the overall wonder I felt at the system's game library. It was the console that, for me, made gaming fun again, as it seemed developers Japanese and Western alike took chances on ideas that they might not have attempted elsewhere.

Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road Review

UGO
19 October 2009
  • Excerpt: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is a RPG on training wheels. Slow and easy paced, The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road takes away the hassles of party management and automates a large number of functions. This is a game for your girlfriend, your little nephew or someone that's been too intimidated to play a RPG before. It's got a great learning curve, isn't oppressive and doesn't overly penalize players for making mistakes.
  • Pros: ...You've never played an RPG before, but want to try one. ...You know someone that needs a gentle, training-wheels RPG. ...You wear ruby slippers to bed at night.
  • Cons: ...An easy RPG is a turnoff. ...You need broadswords and battle axes. ...You're scarred by flying monkeys.
