Review: Steal Princess (Nintendo DS)

Diehard GameFAN
12 November 2009
  • Summary: Steal Princess is one of those games that is going to have trouble finding an audience. Its first strike comes from the awkward control scheme that tends to do the opposite of what you press. The second strike comes from the fact that despite the poor gameplay, the game manages to be so easy that you will never once be challenged by all of the levels in the game. The final swing and miss comes from the fact that levels are repetitive and monotonous.

  • Conclusion: The rule stating that after every three levels comes a puzzle of soul-crushing hardness.
  • Pros: Riding on a single bullet when I've lined up enemies perfectly in its line of fire.
  • Cons: Riding on a single bullet when I haven't lined up enemies perfectly in its line of fire.

Nintendo World Report

  • Summary: A great idea for a puzzle platformer game that's bogged down by questionable implementation.
  • Pros: Clever puzzles that feel rewarding when completed, Deep level builder, Interesting boss battles
  • Cons: Both control styles are flawed for different reasons, Only six custom level slots, Some puzzles are downright cruel and frustrating, The automatic lock-on is horrendous, You have to unlock everything for the level builder

  • Conclusion: A great challenge, so long as you don’t mind some headaches.
  • Pros: The moments of inspiration when you finally figure out the trick to a level that’s been holding you back.
  • Cons: The clock keeps ticking while the end-of-level door-opening animation plays, so you fail to get a time bonus.
