  • Excerpt: After I finished playing the first Spectrobes, the last thought I had about the game was that it could only go up from where it started. Despite decent sales, the game itself lacked substance. Also, in this reviewer's opinion, the game wasn't much fun at all. But after taking a look at early screenshots and reading previews of the sequel, I decided that "Beyond the Portals" showed promise.

  • Conclusion: Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals isn't a great game, but it's not a bad game either. If you played and loved the original Spectrobes, you'll most likely be happy with this sequel. If you passed on the original, there's not much reason to get into the series now. It's a decent monster-battling system, but, frankly, RPGs like Pokémon feel so much deeper and more rewarding.

Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals

  • Excerpt: I had the chance to attend the Disney Interactive Studios Holiday Preview event in Toronto this past September. During this event my curiosity was peaked when I was introduced to a new DS release entitled Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals. At first, I thought the game was a Pokemon clone, however Beyond the Portals stands apart from such games with its rich science fiction story and gameplay features.

Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals review

Gameplanet
22 December 2008
  • Excerpt: A distinctive, pretty and involving RPG from developers Jupiter. Solve puzzles, train your character and monsters, enjoy a futuristic storyline across multiple worlds and meet a cast of interesting characters.
  • Pros: Battles are fun, they take a lot of the tedium out of the RPG ‘grind’ so many games suffer from. Collecting fossils and minerals across varied (albeit a tad generic) worlds adds an interesting element.
  • Cons: The game starts a little slow, saving is limited to special areas which can be a little annoying on a handheld system. Camera controls would have been a nice touch for those demanding battles.
