Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (Nintendo DS)

Diehard GameFAN
19 June 2010
  • Summary: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a throwback to not only Megaten titles from several generations ago but to classic RPGs from the 80s in general. As fun as this retro feel is for older gamers like myself who grew up on Wizardry and The Bard’s Tale the lack of animated visuals for 95% of the game combined with the rehash of old sprites and storylines from previous Megaten titles will no doubt alienate younger or more casual gamers.

M-rated DS game that's definitely not for kids - sci-fi RPG.

Common Sense Media
17 June 2010
  • Summary: Parents need to know that Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is one of the rare Mature-rated games for the Nintendo DS. This is a dark role-playing game filled with gloom and depression that pervades the Earth, and it's hard not to be affected by that. The game has sex and violence, but it is tempered by the lower-technology of the DS. You don't see animated blood and guts when people die. Instead, you see a frame or two of the character bending over and falling.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS) - Review

VGChartz
26 May 2010
  • Excerpt: It was just last year when the Shin Megami Tensei (MegaTen) series made its debut on the Nintendo DS with the spin-off title Devil Survivor - one of the best RPGs I’ve played on the handheld. Just a year after Devil Survivor’s release, Atlus brings us Strange Journey, a game that revisits the series’ first-person dungeon-crawling roots. Is Strange Journey another solid addition to the MegaTen series?

  • Conclusion: If you're one of the fans who are mad about the unorthodox direction of Final Fantasy XIII, Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey is just what you need. Classic JRPG gameplay doesn't get more solid or addictive than this, and it's wrapped up in a cool scifi story that raises some compelling questions. If you're looking for a long, deep and engrossing RPG, take this Strange Journey on your DS.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey – Staff Review

RandomNPC
30 April 2010
  • Excerpt: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey , the most recent addition to the rather scant roll of the series’ mainline continuity, is a game with significance for the series as a whole. As the central pillar of the Shin Megami Tensei series, the mainline entries have always been fairly old school dungeon crawling affairs, considerably darker than the numerous side stories that have spun off of them.
