Professor Layton and The Last Specter (DS) Review

Vooks
9 January 2012
  • Excerpt: The Professor Layton series was born on the Nintendo DS, it seems fitting that this latest instalment will be one of last great games on the system that brought the original to life. Although this is the last Layton title on the DS, it takes you back in time to before Layton met Luke, making it the first game chronologically in the series.

Professor Layton and the Last Specter (DS) - Review

VGChartz

  • Excerpt: It’s tough being the sequel to follow hot on the heels of the masterpiece that was Professor Layton and the Unwound Future . In fact, as most followers of the series know, The Unwound Future was at one point in time considered to be the closing chapter of Layton’s saga. However, in our modern world, economic success can make it very hard to lay a franchise to rest, even after the original story has been told (I’m looking your way, George Lucas).

  • Excerpt: I’m been a big fan of the Professor Layton games as they easily get the highest amount of playtime of any game on my DS. The latest Professor Layton game, The Last Spectre, is a prequel of sorts. As a bonus it also comes with a packed in RPG set in the Layton universe called London Life. How does this fourth installment of the series fare? Does it bring anything new to the Layton game play formula?

  • Conclusion: Another quality Layton mystery, but one that begins to show the formula's age.
  • Pros: More Layton, Luke's origin revealed, a free bonus game.
  • Cons: Too many easy puzzles, a bogus mini-game, sliding block puzzles.

  • Conclusion: Professor Layton and the Last Specter continues to push the high production values of the cartoon mystery series while still providing a slew of enjoyable puzzles along the way. The prequel nature of the game gives gamers a better sense of the characters' pasts and helps to give a better link into connecting the whole series together.
