The game has singleplayer and multiplayer mode and has ESRB: E / CERO: A / OFLC: PG / PEGI: 3+ rating.
New Super Mario Bros includes elements from Mario games and is seen in 2D, with most of the characters and objects in 3D polygonal renderings, resulting in a 2.5D effect. It contains 80 levels divided between eight worlds, which are shown in the DS’ bottom screen. The goal of each level is to reach the black flag at the end. At the end of each world, a main boss must be defeated in order to proceed to the next world. There are three new power-ups introduced in New Super Mario Bros. The Blue Koopa Shell lets Mario withdraw into a shell to protect himself, the Mega Mushroom grows Mario to an incredible size, and the Mini-Mushroom makes Mario very small. The game’s multiplayer mode pits two players against each other as they play as Mario and Luigi in one of five stages. Both players can attack each other to steal the stars the other player has grabbed. The game contains 18 minigames for single play, some which can also be played in multiplayer mode, and ten multiplayer minigames exclusive for play over a wireless connection. The game features original music composed by Asuka Ohta and Hajime Wakai, and new arrangements of some of Kondo’s themes from previous Mario games. A feature in the game is that some characters perform a dance move in response to certain riffs in the score. During the credits, tapping any letter will result in a sound effect (each letter and symbol has its own sound) and tapping anywhere on the screen will result in the jumping noise. Each time the lid of the NDS is closed, Mario says "Bye-Bye", while opening it again will result in Mario saying his usual phrase "It’s Me Mario", even if the player is playing as Luigi.

How do you go about saving on this game (Nintendo DS)? Do you have to complete a certain percentage of the game in order for saving to be an option? My son gets pretty far in the game only to wind up having to start over from the very beginning over and over.
