Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 Review
22 July 2010
Excerpt: If you're familiar with developer Traveller's Tales' previous Lego games, you might think you know what Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is like even before you've played it--and you'd be partially right. In this game, just as in Lego Star Wars and its ilk, you (perhaps along with a friend on the same console) experience a witty and wordless rendition of a famed tale, with your favorite characters replaced by blocky Lego re-creations.
Pros: Funny and charming, Tons of variety and replay value, Downplays combat in favor of coin collecting, Lots of hidden nooks and crannies
Excerpt: Forget complex storylines, plot intricacies, and profound character exposition: The Lego version of Harry Potter has slapstick. That's really the only option left for a game where none of the characters can speak, but luckily, it works just as well here as it has in past Lego games. Indeed, fans of the blocky adventure titles will take to Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 like Hermione to homework, reveling in the game's humour, familiar gameplay, and variety of challenges.
Pros: Charming to the last, Varied and entertaining gameplay, Well-structured narrative
Conclusion: Overall, LEGO Harry Potter for DS is a perfectly serviceable game. It’s reasonably polished and gives suitable fan service to Rowling’s masterpiece. It’s also a game that isn’t quite as engrossing as other LEGO treatments, in part because it’s not as action-packed. Some of this may be an inevitable product of the source material and it may also be a matter of taste; players who enjoy more of an exploration- and puzzle-based game may find this to be a good treatment.
Excerpt: The first thing we scribbled down after beginning LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 was 'GTA'., It's a strange comparison to make but LEGO Harry Potter's game world gives you a similar sense of freedom to do what you want, when you want, albeit in bite-sized episodes. The result is a game that is both familiar and very different in structure to any LEGO game that has gone before.
