Summary: I picked up this game for my 8-year-old son. I think it is excellent and he really enjoys it, but he has definitely struggled with some of the problems and scenarios, so I think he might get frustrated if he did not have adults around who can answer his questions. Fortunately, my wife plays fairly well and I am a chess expert (2000+ USCF), so we can handle any questions that arise and help him overcome obstacles.
Summary: I liked this game at first. It has a few different options for difficulty level. I started on easy and found it challenging. I got to the point where I could win 2 out of 3 games, but then i got bored because you can only play as White. Also, the computer plays the Center Counter (Scandinavian Defense) every time. It would be nice to learn how to play against some other openings and to play against the computer as Black.
Summary: I bought this for my 8 and 6 year-olds who love chess. They are beginners and I thought it would be really great because they love their DS also. The problem is that there is no sound and they have to read all the tips and instrustions. They can't always read well enough to understand and they get frustrated. It might be better for older kids.
Summary: We got this for our 10 (now 11) year old. He already knew the basics of chess when he got it, but over time this game has become like his own little secret weapon. It's taught him moves other people don't seem to know and he can beat just about everyone he plays now, including adults. I agree this game can be frustrating (chess is not an easy game in and of itself) and I don't know that most young kids would enjoy it. Evidently it can be frustrating for adults too.
Summary: My son is ten and has learned some of the basics of Chess. He has enjoyed this option of learning by video game. He seems to be thinking of the strategy behind the game of Chess even when he is not playing on his DS.
Summary: Ok, already had a basic understanding of chess. I bought this hoping it would help develop my skills as I am a complete beginner for the most part (I know all the rules, pieces, etc but developing strategy has always been hard in this game for me). Anyway, this game starts off fine.... the tutorials are nice for learning the pieces and how they move. This was a nice brush up. The tutorial is great if you've never ever played before and don't know squat about chess.
