Old school game with a twist

Thomas Durant, Amazon
23 April 2014
  • Summary: Not a bad turned based RPG, with the nice twist that you have to map the floor of the dungeon as you go along. The game will most likely interest those who really live for classic RPG dungeon crawls and are more interested in game play than fancy graphics.

The first, but not the best.

Ezra Needham, Amazon
21 April 2013
  • Summary: I love these old-school JRPGs, and the Etrian Odyssey series takes the cake in modern, turn-based old-school style games. I played this one after playing Etrian Odyssey 4, and it is interesting seeing its ancestor.

From a fanboy

Daniel J. Shatz "Fantasy lover", Amazon
22 December 2011
  • Summary: I loved Etrian odyssey 2 and 3. So much that I have a bunch of rpgs I need to finish and I'm still replaying 3 as we speak. But as much as I hate to say it I can't recommend this one. First of all unless you have hours to kill or you like buying warp wires all the time don't bother starting a game. There's no quick save function, a feature that helped drastically when playing 2 and 3 on a lunch break.

Typical RPG But Fun Anyway. GENERAL GUIDE TO THE GAME AS WELL

Nathan T., Amazon
30 June 2010
  • Summary: The game, in all honesty, nothing really special - graphic, character, and gameplay-wise. It is similar to most other RPGs. However, it is a fun game nonetheless. It is a hardcore dungeon crawler. You can only save in town. Your mission is to explore and, using your stylus, map out the labyrinth and find its many secrets. There are three types of enemies - normal random encounters, FOEs (mini-bosses) and Bosses.

Sometimes I like my hand held...

Jen "Geek Girl", Amazon
18 December 2008
  • Summary: Who has time in this day and age to try to figure things out for themselves? I'd much rather have someone just tell me where to go and what to do so I can be done with it and move onto the next game. Ok, so all sarcasm aside, I really hated to give an Atlus game 3 stars being that I am a devout fan for many, many years and owner of all of their titles from the original Playstation going forward. Etrian Odyssey had so much potential.

Tedious timewaster

Rorke Haining, Amazon
13 August 2007
  • Summary: I'm middle-aged, male, and a lifelong gamer. I've forgotten more games than most people ever learn how to play. I love RPGs in particular and have played many easy and hard RPGs through to completion. I can honestly say, this is the worst RPG that I've ever bothered to finish. I see a lot of glowing reviews by gushing fans. I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I might have loved it a few decades ago, but it's sub-par by today's standards.

Somewhat boring, lots of grinding and no replayability

Mr. S. A. Roome, amazon.co.uk
9 September 2012
  • Summary: The game is extremely boring, you spend absolutely ages killing the same monsters over and over to move on a little. There are some nice ideas in the game but it it is spoilt by this and being very difficult. The game is also balanced poorly, the classes are balanced poorly, and there is very little replayability as the game is almost impossible if you don't use certain classes. Waste of time playing this in my opinion.

A hard game to love

arch69, amazon.co.uk
16 July 2010
  • Summary: I love rpg's but found this far too slow. I dont mind level grinding but your characters level up far too slowly and it takes forever too gather money for new equipment. I know the game has its fans but its not for me.
