Conclusion: The first rendition of Cave Story is still a freeware title: You can download it for your PC whenever you wish. But the portability of the DSi version is very welcome, as are the difficulty settings and Jukebox. Besides which, the original Cave Story was put together by Pixel for the sheer fun of it, and millions of players have enjoyed the game since. It would be nice to compensate him by purchasing the game. Disclosure: A review copy was provided by the publisher.
Excerpt: Cave Story 3D is the easiest, toughest sell I've ever encountered. On one hand, the original Cave Story still ranks as one of the best games I've ever played and is one of the few I've taken the time to play more than once. At the same time, the original is still available on PC for free and the numerous re-releases included more content than the 3D-enabled port. Then again, it's another chance to play a great game with the added advantage of portability...
Excerpt: If you were to put Cave Story 3D in front of gamers that lived through the 8-bit era and told them it appeared on the original NES (just not in North America), you would have them fooled until...
Pros: + Throwback gaming at its finest, + Great use of 3D, + Challenging without being “cheap”
Conclusion: The story of Cave Story is interesting in of itself. Cave Story is a 2D scrolling platformer/shooter for the PC that was made by Japanese programmer Daisuke Amaya (aka “Pixel”) over the course of five years. Pixel released Cave Story for free download in 2004 and the game eventually gained popularity, an English translation and found its way onto the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DSi via their respective download services.
Conclusion: Ach, was habe ich mich auf „Cave Story 3D“ gefreut.
