  • Conclusion: But my biggest gripe of all is not with the gameplay or the graphics, but with the accessibility. I will admit that since my days playing Anno 1602 , I haven’t played settlement sims as much as I would have liked to, maybe because most of them fall under the radar. Once I started playing this game I noticed that it lacked one very important feature; a tutorial. Even the manual doesn’t have one.

Arkanoid DS

Game Vortex
29 December 2008
  • Excerpt: The DS screen is a perfect feature for this game since the height allows a more accurate simulation of the old arcade cabinets. Arkanoid DS looks way better than anything we played in the arcade, or at least anything faithful to the old style, with a few upgrades. Available customization of everything from Vaus (the little platform you use to reflect balls) to the blocks and frame and background and music is nice.

Arkanoid DS

  • Excerpt: There’s a Wikipedia article dedicated to Breakout clones – of which Arkanoid is the most notable. It’s hard to say what the first such game I played was. I definitely remember playing it on some sort of PC or Mac thing at a friend’s house when I was quite young, and I’ve still got Alleyway for the Game Boy somewhere. In any case, I’ve always loved it, to the point that I wanted – and probably still want, for that matter – a Quickshot Supervision, purely for Crystball.

  • Summary: All in all, is a quality remake of an old classic and the bargain bin price of $20 helps solidify the deal. You won’t be playing it for very long, but you’ll enjoy the experience none the less. Anyone who is a fan of brick-busting games should definitely pick it up.

  • Summary: Breakout was a standalone arcade hit of the 1970s, simply because it was unique and addictive. It took the best elements of Pong and combined them with something new, and many competitors rushed to clone it. A decade later, the first noteworthy Japanese competitor to Atari’s brick breaking supremacy was Taito’s Arkanoid. Arkanoid revived the Breakout fever by adding new innovations to the formula, such as powerups and a final boss fight.
