Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

The 8th Circuit
12 January 2009
  • Excerpt: It's early 2008 and the floodgates have opened for Nintendo. Some of their best titles of the year came out: Wii Fit , Super Smash Bros. Brawl , Mario Kart Wii , and of course, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin . They took a somewhat established series, and opted to catch it up to speed, adding more touch control, online, and a darker storyline. But could it compare with triple A titles like Brawl? Read on.

Kid-friendly strategy franchise gets more mature.

Common Sense Media
8 June 2008
  • Summary: Parents need to know that this is the most mature game yet in the Advance Wars franchise. While all of the games in the series focus on war, this is the darkest of the bunch, featuring a world that has been laid to waste by a near-extinction meteor shower and is now filled with depressed, ruthless, self-serving survivors. That said, players step into the boots of a group of altruistic soldiers whose actions and motives are never anything short of admirable.

Game Freaks 365
13 February 2008
  • Excerpt: Intelligent Systems' Advance Wars series must have seriously confused that "love and war" saying. Previously the cute, harmless commanding officers (COs) and bright, colorful units and levels directly contrasted the ideas behind capturing cities, building armies, and killing enemies. Three iterations of Advance Wars ravaged many a handheld screen for years, but things have changed. The Orange Star, Blue Moon, Yellow Comet, and Green Earth forces are nowhere to be seen.

  • Excerpt: Game: Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin Genre: Turn-Based Strategy Platform: Nintendo DS In the last few months, I’ve been trying to step outside the genres of video games I’m normally attracted to and expand my gaming horizons. This includes playing games of a tactical or strategic nature, like Jeanne d’Arc and Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSP. With Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin for the DS, I’ve gotten a taste of turned-based strategy, and I think I like it.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin Review

GameSpot
29 January 2008
  • Summary: Advance Wars' new look and feel won't appeal to a lot of fans, but the series gameplay remains intact.
  • Pros: Terrific online support, Solid map editor, Huge amounts of single- and multiplayer content, New visuals look sharper, more detailed
  • Cons: Writing isn't strong enough to support grim look and feel, Single-player campaign can be excessively difficult

  • Conclusion: Overall Days of Ruin is a fine inductee into the ranks of the Advance Wars army. Fans of the franchise may be taken aback by some of these elements but the core of this title is very much faithful to the series. If you own a DS and you're looking for a strategy game then this is the only place you need to look. You simply won't find a better handheld strategy title on the market.
