Excerpt: When I had a chance to play A Witch's Tale during RPGamer's Run to the Sun event in July, starting at the beginning of the game didn't afford me much opportunity to see how the game actually played out. I've now completed the first three areas (of what appears to be seven), and I've a better idea of how this game works.
Excerpt: Sorry, A Witch's Tale, you get no headline. A Witch’s Tale is one if the most highly anticip... hold on, that’s not right... A Witch’s Tale is the hottest DS relea... nope, that’s still not right... A Witch’s Tale is pretty oka... close, but still not quite there... A Witch’s Tale is a game… there, that’ll do… So.... Pros: Good use of stylus, Insipid story, character, and settings, Boooorrrriiiinnng, Uninspirted combat, Makes you slap yourself in the face
Summary: A Witch’s Tale is a stylistic but simplistic RPG. While the presentation and music are charming, the gameplay feels diluted compared to other games in its genre, and the stylus controls can feel imprecise at times. If you’re looking for a challenging and epic RPG, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you’re looking for something to pass the time and like anything laden in fairytale references, this would do nicely.
Excerpt: When I think about A Witch's Tale, I feel like a parent who wants to scream at their child, "But you had so much potential!" Nothing is more disappointing than knowing a game had all the makings to be something fun and failed because of one large aspect of the gameplay. So, let me preface this review by saying A Witch's Tale is not a total abomination, but the areas that are flawed are very flawed.
Excerpt: A Witch's Tale began its lifecycle as a stylus-controlled Action RPG, but somewhere along the way, Hitmaker decided things weren't working out. In the process, the game went from action to point-and-click adventure. The switch isn't a failure, though it is clear the issues that may have caused the switch in direction haven't been completely cleared up. Visuals are one of A Witch's Tale 's few standout features.
Excerpt: Ok. I’ll level with you. I’ve just scrapped my fifth attempt at an opening to this review. I’ve tried food analogies, tomato discussion, references to Halloween (the holiday and the movie), Tim Burton films, Okami Phantasy Star … So, nuts to that. Settle in, kiddies. It’s story time. Once upon a time, there was a little DS RPG called A Witch’s Tale .
