Maken X – Second Opinion

GameCritics.com
11 May 2013
  • Excerpt: Right off the bat, I'd have to say that Dale was rather harsh on Maken X . Many of the problems that he mentioned were not without merit, but at the same time, they didn't bother me to the same degree. The one thing we will agree upon is the voice acting. It's so bad that you'll want to give an Oscar to Mark Hamill in comparison to some of his work in other gaming projects.

  • Conclusion: But helping to drag the game right into the depths of terrible gaming is the atrocious voice acting. The voice work here is a good example of why so many gamers clamor for subtitles. So they have to read a bit, no big deal, but it sure beats dealing with bad voice acting. Even worse is that the samples of the dialogue have way too much reverb, and it sounds like everyone is talking in the bathroom.

PlanetDreamcast
25 April 2000
  • Summary: Maken X is a real treat for Dreamcast owners looking for something different. The unique combat system is executed flawlessly, and makes for some surprisingly entertaining gameplay. The title does feel a bit too short, but in the end Maken X is an innovative title that all fans of first person shooters and action should check out.
  • Pros: Good graphics, great control system, superb character designs, smooth framerate, good music.
  • Cons: Terrible voice acting, minor graphic flaws, generally short in length.

Expert Review

TheStar.com
31 October 1999
  • Excerpt: Superconsole horsepower pushing superconsole graphics does well to hide less than super gameplay in Maken X. There is probably a reason the 1st-person “slasher” genre is under-exploited: a sci-fi sword game offers close-quarter combat but does not, by nature, offer an appropriate perspective.

Maken X – Review

GameCritics.com
21 December 1995
  • Excerpt: If you follow anime (Japanese animation) and manga (comics) to any degree beyond that of a casual indulger, you will notice a repeating premise is that of a pretty, smart (and oftentimes barely of legal age) young woman to whom the fate of the world has been entrusted. Perhaps the producers of these works believe that their male viewers would like seeing females dishing out some butt-whupping and saving lives, but to be realistic, I'd have to say that it has more to do...
