Summary: In a tough sector, having a unique selling point is key, and that is what has made Sony's series of SLTs stand out from the crowd. But with the Alpha 58, its advantages have been diluted quite a bit.
The 20.1-million-pixel sensor sees it resolving greater levels of detail than its siblings, but the results are compromised at high ISO and are not as useable as images from rival models.
Pros: Picture Effects, Low light performance, Good EVF, We've been particularly impressed by low light performance, with noise control very good at the top of the sensitivity run. If you're not that interested in raw format shooting, you've got a wide range of fun and interesting features on offer here. There's a much more extensive range of Picture Effects, while beginners may be tempted by functions such as Auto Object Framing. Sweep Panorama is a fun feature too that wil...
Cons: Slow autofocus, Frustrating raw format use, Not an articulating/touchscreen, It's a little disappointing not to have a fully articulating screen. While tilting screens do have their benefits, for not much more bulk than is on offer here, the added flexibility of a fully articulating screen could have been added. It also doesn't flip up 180 degrees, as the Sony NEX-3N does, which is very useful for self-portraits. Like with other Sony cameras, both in the Alpha and NEX...
Excerpt: The vast majority of SLRs we see on the street bear Canon or Nikon logos. Sony clearly wants to change this, and by our reckoning it's going about it the right way. Digital SLR technology is mature and refined, and ultimately there's little to choose between similarly priced Canon and Nikon models. Sony, on the other hand, provides some genuine choice with cameras such as the new Sony SLT-A58. Its SLT cameras aren't technically SLRs.
