Summary: I needed this mainly for picture taking of ebay items I am selling. The camera takes very dark pictures and often blurry pictures. It works good enough for now but I will be in the market for a new one very soon.
Summary: Takes great pictures, when it works, which is rarely. After reading everyone else's reviews, I see I'm not the only one that had the view screen mysteriously go blank on it. I baby this camera, and it still died on me. It works intermittantly, but I found that many sony cameras from this era had the same problem, but this one is not listed in the recall. I was a loyal Sony fan until this camera wandered into my life.
Summary: I liked this camera when I first purchased it. It worked fine despite a few cosmetic flaws. However, after about 2 weeks, it stopped working. The screen shows only black and if I take a picture, it just looks black. I'm disappointed in my purchase.
Summary: Sony has finally recalled this and other models for the black LCD screen problem. Other models being recalled include those listed here: http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1128703521.html To issue the recall work order, call Sony 1-866-703-7669. I had just gone through the process, and it was rather painless. Hope this helps!
Summary: I purchased this camera in November 2002. For almost 2 years it functioned perfectly, then about 6 weeks ago, I suddenly had a black screen. It is now in for repair for the black screen problem for the third time in 6 weeks. Fortunately, I purchased a 4 year extended warranty policy, and it hasn't cost me for the attempted repairs. I didn't know the problem could be corrected by whacking the camera!
Summary: This was a great camera, for a while. Of course as soon as the warranty expired, it had problems. The first thing that happened (and also happened exactly to a cousin of mine with exact camera) was that you could no longer run USB cord directly from camera to computer. Tried on 3 computers, and it just would not work. I had to go buy a memory stick reader to transfer pictures. Second, the LCD showed nothing but black and menu items.
Summary: I first purchased this camera in november of 2002. I researched all of the 2MP cameras in the price range and determined that the P51 had the best value/features. The camera was a great performer, and I recommended it to three of my friends, who all bought one. Starting about a year later, my camera started to flicker when in camera mode. Soon after it would go completely black, and would not capture any pictures.
Summary: I have owned this camera for 2 years (paid $280) and was well pleased with it until about 10 days ago. Then the LCD screen went black and pictures were black. After reading several reviews today from camera owners with the same black screen problem, I gave my camera a couple of whacks to the left side. Presto! The camera started working, the LCD screen came on and I was able to take pictures and review them. Thanks to the reviewers who mentioned hitting the camera.
Summary: Pictures are very noisy(grainy) and colors are inaccurate. Many fine textures and details such as woodgrain are almost completely lost. Lowering ISO settings help reduce the noise, but it is still there. Software bundle is pathetic. It's pretty much just a driver. Upsides are that the camera is easy to learn and use, it has an AF-assist lamp, it's not locked in Auto like some other cameras, and good rechargable AA's and a so-so charger is included in the box(some sony...
Summary: The LCD on my camera has also gone black. It would cost me over $140.00 to fix and I don't think it's worth it. I am very disappointed with Sony. I didn't even get 2 years of good service with the DSC-P51. I will never get another SONY product.
