Summary: This is really a great camera. I read about the new Canon Gx1 and marveled at the large sensor in it and then I found that Sony had made this camera a few years ago with a full APC size sensor. I read up on it and saw this one on eBay and was lucky to get it at a good price. With a large sensor and a fast zoom lens this is surely better than most entry level DSLRs. It is a hunk, but if you are willing to haul it around the results are great.
Overall, I have 2 already, this camera work great for your money.

Summary: This camera is very unique and easy to use, I am professional photographer, I enjoy taking picture from single person to a families of 10 or more. This camera doing all. The picture very clear and auto or manual focus is great. I like it. I have more than one already. Compare this to other camera I use, this is better adjust any way your want right on your fingertips and easy.
Summary: I have been using this camera for 5 years now, with over 7,600 shots taken. The only complaint I have is that the flash is just a little too bright, but the output is easily adjusted. When paired with Sony's close-up lens(VCL-M3367), it takes beautiful macro shots. The color & clarity of the shots are outstanding. And, the battery life is exceptional. I often forget that it's not a DSLR!
Summary: I have purchased this camera to replace the identical item, that was stolen from my car, while I was on vacation in Rhode Island. Since it was taken, I had purchased several Canon cameras, and a dozen lenses to replace what this one camera did. It has a versatility that, in my opinion, is unequalled in the digital world.
Great - proof Sony acquisition of Minolta was a tragedy

Summary: The Dsc-r1 is a very good to great camera and a fantastic value. This was the last camera produced by Sony before they acquired Minolta (I think) and if this camera was an indication of product development direction photo enthusiasts missed out on who knows what innovations. Sony cameras seem fine now but they look and perform pretty much like the rest of the pack. The R1 and some of its predecessors were unique and fine cameras.

When I die I want the R1 to be buried with me so I can use it in heaven.

Summary: This camera can do certain things that other cameras cannot do. I have 3 Sony F828's and two R1's and a Nikon D3s. 6 months ago I met a collector that was selling a new R1 in a sealed box for $600. The offer was too tempting so I bought it. But too bad I'll probably sell it because I don't even use the other one much. There is a technique that you can do with this camera that creates some stunning photos. And I found this out by accident.
Summary: With an array of DSLR's, Point & Shoots, and camcorders all in frequent use, I must say that the Sony R1 produces the best still image of the lot The camera takes a superb photo with remarkable depth and resolution in any lighting conditions, producing true colors and tones. OK, this gizmo lacks the cute stuff and all the bells and whistles of, say, my D Series Nikon, or my Canon EOS Rebel, but it takes one heck of a great still picture -- distant, mid-range or macro.
still a good performer needs to be updated soon though

Summary: I love this camera and wish that Sony would make an update to the line. I have bought and sold several of them on eBay. The Sensor is 10.3 megapixels which is still adequate The thing is built like a tank and without interchangeable lenses reduces the chance for dust The 2" LCD is a little small, but the EVF works okay.
Summary: I am so happy with my R1 even now there are not a lot of cameras that can compare to R1 since it's not SLR. Clear photos. Over 23000 photos so far and no problems at all. Have this camera for 5 years and it is great for everything I need. I consider my self mid-heavy photographer and just happy and nice moments with this camera. I would buy it again, no doubt!
