Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 is a mega-zoom camera fitted with a 12x optical zoom lens. The camera is equipped with image stabilization capability, three inch LCD screen, 7.2 mega pixel resolution and a wide range of manual control options. Novices will love the easy auto operation and the variety of scene modes options. Advanced and serious photographers will appreciate the full range of manual controls provided, including aperture and shutter priority, program and full manual options.

The CNet review points out that DSC H5 gives adequate picture quality with rich true color reproduction under reasonably good illumination levels. At higher ISO levels the noise levels are high. The camera is equipped with a smart zoom feature. The translation of images to a lower pixel range depending on the zoom level, facilitated by the smart zoom, is quite useful. The 32 MB memory provided in the camera is not adequate for high quality image storage at 7.2 mega pixel levels. The noise levels are quite prevalent at ISO 400 level, according to this review. At ISO 800 and above the images are not good enough for printing. As per the review the video output is remarkably good for a still camera. The Steves Digicams review points out that the three inch LCD with high resolution (230,000 pixels) provided in the camera, supported by the patented Sony’s clear photo LCD plus technology, is excellent for picture preview. The power consumption is low due to Sony’s advanced image processing technology. A single charge of battery can produce up to 340 shots, making it reasonably comfortable for outdoor use. Neo Camera states that the picture quality of DSC H5 is good up to ISO 200. Purple fringing of the image is the major problem identified by this review. Picture quality and speed are evenly matched to give optimal performance. The review says that DSC H5 performance is significantly improved when compared to the older models from Sony.

Do not be alarmed by the long list of pros and cons here, the Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 is a good camera. Since several technical review sites have seen this camera, it has been scrutinized quite a bit. The H5 does improve significantly on its predecessor, the H1and even does a few things better than the Read more

By far the most difficult part of this review was identifying real, meaningful differences between the output of this camera and the H2, reviewed last week, and attempting to discover if it is worth the extra $100 or so. The good news is that everything we liked about the H1 and the H2 is still here; handling is excellent, it's very fast and responsive and the results - even shooting in full auto mode with default settings - excellent. There are few cameras I can... Read more

Camera Review: Cyber-shot DSC-H527242679481Sony CybershotDSC-H5I was on my vacation, cooking my family breakfast when my phone rang. It was my editor from PopPhoto.com touching base with me. He asked about the cameras that I was using and reviewing and I told him that I loved the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T10 (Click here to see this review) but hated the Cyber-shot DSC-H5. Well, after sleeping on it for a few nights I've decided that hate may be a little strong. I think a... Read more

If you are looking for a camera with ultra zoom, than this is the camera for you. I would highly recommend this camera to everyone who needs or wants a mid range digital camera. This camera will provide you with great 4 x 6, 5 x 7, 8 x 10, or even larder sized photos without any problem. If you are looking for a large LCD, you do not have to look any further. Twelve time optical zoom will get you much closer to your subject than your eyes can. So why are you still... Read more

  5. Sony Cyber-Shot H5

    7 September 2009

Sony's high-end ultra-zoom, the H5 does a pretty good job as an ultra-zoom with 7 megapixels, full manual controls and a 3 inch LCD. The camera is nicely built and looks professional - heck, some people even asked me if it was Sony's new digital SLR! The Sony H5 features a big 12x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization. And you can see what you're framing using the nice and large 3 inch LCD! Unfortunately, the LCD visibility is not as good as competition.... Read more

Have only had camera for a few weeks but have taken hundreds of photos. This is the best mid-range digital I have ever seen. In my opinion, the reviews I have read don't do this camera justice. I highly recommend this camera for anyone. I bought this camera for my wife as I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR of my own. I find the photos I have taken with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5 are superior to those I have taken with the Rebel. The preset settings all... Read more

This camera has 2 AA batteries. If you re charge them and start taking pictures, after 30 + pictures with flash you will end up re charging. I look like a stupid running around to find the charger in middle of a party at my home. I have Sony cameras for long time and I like them. But this one... it's a NO NO. Read more

I have had a Sony DSC-H5 camera for almost one year and found today that it will no longer autofocus when I press the shutter button halfway down. The manufacturer warranty is one year, so at least I have a few days to get the camera returned for service. I treat my camera equipment very carefully, so abuse is not the issue. After reading quite a few posts from other consumers with the same problem ( www.photographyblog.co... ), I guess I'm in good company. I have... Read more

It may be the case with an SLR as well, but the camera seems to have a lot of noise in black areas in less than sunlight conditions. I tried over 1000 combinations of manual settings fruitlessly. Read more

My son writes this review: I would just like to comment on this camera and add my opinion of it. We bought it used, so the shutter button was already broken. I'm not bummed about that because this camera has a manual focus that can be used to get the right picture, if the auto-focus won't do it correctly. I've found that the battery life is actually okay, but that was after I received some better batteries. The batteries are Energizer Rechargeable, 2450 mAH, and they... Read more
