DP Review
2 March 2015
  • Summary: Its 1080p footage is the cleanest, most detailed we've yet seen, with virtually no moiré and often jaw-dropping low-light performance. Some of the low light advantage is undercut if you need to stop-down to achieve sufficient depth-of-field but, unlike smaller sensor systems, you have the choice...
  • Pros: Impressive image quality, Superb, detailed, essentially moiré-free 1080p footage, Outstanding 4K (UHD) video when used with external recorder, Useful, high resolution electronic viewfinder, Completely silent shooting available, Microphone and headphone ports, Useful tools, such as focus peaking a...
  • Cons: Limited to contrast-detect AF, while a7/II siblings have on-sensor phase-detect AF, Lower dynamic range and resolution than immediate competitors, Sony's Raw compression scheme can lead to posterization at high contrast edges, Small battery can be restrictive, especially for video shooting, Lack ...

  • Conclusion: Is it perfect? No, obviously not. Perfect doesn't exist. But Sony's A7S is surely among the most exciting cameras ever made available to photographers at such an accessible price.

What Digital Camera
7 July 2014
  • Summary: Usually you would expect a camera with such a high sensitivity range to be the preserve of professional sports or wildlife photographers, or photojournalists, but since the AF speed or shooting rate is not quite fast enough for serious sports or wildlife photographers, the A7S won’t really appeal to...
  • Pros: High ISO noise performance; Great dynamic range
  • Cons: Low resolution might not be for all; 4k option requires off-camera recording

The Luminous Landscape
18 June 2014
  • Excerpt: Sony is what is known in the business world as a "spoiler". While many manufacturers are satisfied to add new chrome and bumpers to last year's model, Sony constantly pushes the envelope, sometimes fumbling the ball, but often scoring a home run – if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor.

Sony A7S

Imaging Resource
16 May 2014
  • Conclusion: With the A7S, Sony steered away from the megapixel race and offered a rather unique option for their customers: a large, full-frame sensor with only 12 megapixels. To create such a sensor, the individual pixels are made significantly larger than the pixels on, say, Sony's 24.3MP A7 and 36.6MP A7R...
  • Pros: Outstanding high ISO performance, for both stills and video, Excellent JPEG image quality at low to moderately high ISOs, Very good dynamic range, Picture Profiles including SLog2 for professional-grade dynamic range and picture customization for video and stills, XAVC S Full HD video is very hig...
  • Cons: 12 megapixels may not be enough resolution for some applications, 4K video recording is only available with external recorder (not recorded internally), No Cinema 4K (4096 x 2160), Very limited selection of native full-frame lenses, Sluggish startup time, Continuous AF not supported in 5 fps "Spe...

  • Summary: A filmmaker’s dream – but still photographers may be better off looking lower down Sony’s range

Sony Alpha A7S review

Pocket Lint
12 September 2014
  • Conclusion: Just like the original A7, the A7S is mini marvel with a massive sensor. It's the new 12-megapixel chip that's the main point of interest as image quality is the cleanest out of the current trio of A7 cameras available.
  • Pros: Great full-frame image quality, sturdy build and small scale design, great electronic viewfinder quality, tilt-angle LCD with large view, two batteries included
  • Cons: Poor battery life, no wall charger means slow charge, full-frame lens range is lacking, AF-C not comparable to £2k DSLR, 4K capture off-camera only, much pricier than standard A7
