The Samsung WB550 has some excellent specs on offer. Its 24mm wide angle lens with extendable zoom to 240mm means shooting a wide range of subjects is ideal - beyond what most compacts will offer, not least at this affordable price point. Where the WB550 really wains, however, is in its design - the flash is so misplaced it impairs its use significantly. Additionally, use in low light causes difficulty with focus, plus colours can saturate to excess. Read more
The Samsung WB550 is a good ‘high-end’ mega-zoom offering. It does video recording at 720p very well, capturing very good detail and natural looking colors. Its image quality is good but not the best and some may find the WB550 too basic for their abilities. It’s certainly not a bad digital camera, but I feel it could have been way better and this means there is still more room to improve and hopefully Samsung can push forward in future products. Samsung have tried too hard to satisfy the customer who buys by numbers. Gosh! A 10X zoom – that has to be better than a 3X, doesn’t it? And count the pixels – more than 12 million of the things. Terrific! And where will it all end? This camera has 43 million pixels on every square centimetre of sensor. The superb Nikon D700 has 1.4 million pixels per square centimetre of its sensor. If highly saturated pictures are your want, then the WB550 delivers, whilst providing the creative scope of a broader than average focal range in a comparatively compact form factor for a reasonable price. Read more
