DP Review
16 December 2008
  • Conclusion: I can honestly say that I very much enjoyed using the Ricoh R8 while working on this review but I'll also quote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who once wrote: 'There is strong shadow where there is much light'.
  • Pros: Very compact body for the zoom range, Good lens with a very versatile zoom range, Sharp and detailed results at low ISO (although some artifacts visible 'up close'), Effective macro mode, Good responsiveness and overall speed (although focus slows down a lot in low light), Superb user interface a...
  • Cons: Very slow focus and focus hunting in low light, Face Detection unreliable and only available as a shooting mode, Ineffective image stabilization system, not available in movie mode, Zoom and focus pretty noisy, White balance under artificial light not brilliant, very unreliable at ISO 400 and hig...

Ricoh Caplio R8 Review

What Digital Camera
12 May 2008
  • Summary: Every six months a new R series compact seems to appear, often delivering few improvements on its predecessor. But Ricoh has gone a step further with the R8 in completely redesigning the body, and while the extra bulk may be off-putting at first, the handling benefits of the new physique soon become...
  • Pros: Design, Protruding mode dial, 460k pixel LCD, Dynamic range
  • Cons: Aggressive noise reduction, Fringing, Over-sharpening

Ricoh R8

CNET
6 March 2008
  • Summary: The Ricoh R8 may lack traditional manual controls, but it's still endlessly customisable even with a dead simple button and menu layout. The large screen, wide angle lens and long zoom make it worthwhile twiddling the menus to overcome some image issues.
  • Pros: Endlessly tweakable; clean, accessible design; large screen; wide angle and large zoom lens.
  • Cons: No full manual control.

8 August 2014
  • Conclusion: I like the Ricoh R8. It is certainly worth considering alongside some of the more widely recognised brands such as Canon, Sony and Panasonic. Aside from some issues with colour the R8 takes a decent photo in most situations.
  • Pros: LCD screen clarity - novel design - sharpness
  • Cons: Skin tones in some portrait shots

Sturdy compact with a wide-angle lens

Good Gear Guide.au
13 June 2009
  • Summary: While the Ricoh R8 offers a few excellent features such as the 28-200mm lens and the brilliant LCD screen, its images have a few issues that mean it may not be right for everyone.
  • Pros: Sturdy and sophisticated design, 28-200mm lens with stabilisation, incredible LCD display
  • Cons: Noise very prominent at ISO 400 and above, some oversharpening

  • Conclusion: The Ricoh R8 successfully combines an impressive feature set with a user-friendly interface at an affordable price. Ricoh R8

PhotographyBLOG
13 March 2008
  • Summary: Ricoh have set out to make the new R8 a worthy addition to its professional range of compact digital cameras. Both the consumer Caplio branding and slightly awkward design of its predecessor have been dropped, replaced with a much more serious, well-thought out and simplified approach that really...
