The Pentax K10D is a 10.2 megapixel digital SLR camera that combines great picture quality with good handling for professional photographers. The camera is powered by a long-lasting Li-ion battery, and takes SD cards for additional pictures. Neocamera rates the Pentax K10D as excellent. They note that the camera is fitted with nearly every feature possible for a digital SLR camera: stabilization, dust-reduction, weatherproofing, advanced customization, digital white-balance and depth-of-field preview, and an unlimited continuous drive. They also note the features that make this camera stand out from the competition: sensitivity priority mode, shutter-and-aperture priority mode (the camera automatically selects ISO), choice of program line for automatic mode, digital white-balance preview and in-camera RAW conversion.

Digital white-balance preview is particularly interesting because it allows pre visualizing the effect of white-balance, eliminating the need for taking test shots until the desired results are obtained. Digital Photography Review mentions twenty features of the camera, including an 11-point Auto Focus with nine points (in the center) which are sensitive to both horizontal and vertical detail. They also mention that the camera supports high-capacity SD cards (4GB or higher) and includes a remote control from the rear (IR sensor). To attest to it’s ruggedness, Digital Photography Review notes that the K10D body has 72 seals which provide dust and water resistance. The optional battery grip is also dust and weather resistant with 38 seals. They note that it’s clear that Pentax is competing with the likes of the Canon EOS 30D and Nikon D200. ePhotozine agrees that the K10D is packed with features that have been well thought out in a body that has been built to withstand hard use. Pentax Photo Laboratory, the included photo editing software, is surprisingly good for free software. So, overall, according to ePhotozine, the K10D is a serious advanced amateur or semi-pro camera.

  1. Pentax Takes Quantum Leap with New K10D

    Reviewer: Pop Photo
    30 May 2009

The features of the just-announced 10 megapixel Pentax K10D ($899 estimated street, body only) are sure to amaze Pentax lovers, and the photo world in general. Since abandoning the *ist nomenclature on its DLSRs, Pentax has slowly but surely built more features and functions into the K line of DSLRs around the 6 megapixel range, building a line of safe cameras at a nice pricepoint, but no one, not even us here at PopPhoto.com, were expecting such a monumental upgrade... It's been on the market for a few months now, but the folks at CNET have just now gotten around to giving Pentax's K10D DSLR a full review, finding quite a bit to like in the camera with only a few snags keeping it from joining its top-ranked competitors. On the plus side, they found the camera to be well-designed and solidly built, delivering some great-looking pictures, with good color reproduction and broad dynamic range, performing best at settings of ISO 800 or... Pentax K10D and the DA 16-45 f/4 ED AL lens In 2006, Pentax introduced its fair share of surprises. Not only did they announce a cooperation with Samsung, they also introduced the Pentax K100D ( e-Fotografija DIWA Awards review ) with their proprietary image stabilisation system (SR – Shake Reduction) and to top it off, they also presented the technologically advanced and aggressively priced K10D at Photokina 2006. And to end the year in the headlines, there's been... Read more

  1. Good, Solid Camera, trouble with low light

I have owned this camera for 18 months or so, and have used it in a variety of settings, indoor, outdoor, sunny, low light, action, stills, portraits, etc. It absolutely excels when there is enough light. Beautiful pictures, quick focus, solidly made, excellent camera. The problem I have is with low light situations. Not dark, but something less than bright sun. This camera has significant trouble focusing if the subject isn't well lit. Since I bought this camera to take... Read more

This is one fine DSLR. With the accesory grip it is my most comfortable camera. The ergonomic attention to user comfort is superlative when compared with any other camera. The size is perfect; performance is what one expects from a pro oriented machine andthe image quality is excellent. There is a very natural quality to the images. I do find that my Nikon D80 with my Nikkor lenses provides sharper images without post-processing but the Pentax images are excellent as... Read more

I have had this camera since August of '07. I have had 3 pentax cameras in the past 18 years and they give you the best bang for the buck. This one is no exception. I bought it with body only because all Pentax lenses ever made will fit this camera. I am currently using a Sigma 28-200 tele lens ( not digital ) and the pictures are amazing! Pentax is coming out with a 55-300 digital lens at the end of May and I will probably get it. I love the feel of this camera. It is... Read more

After only 5 months with my new K10D, I've made the difficult decision to get rid of it (everything, lenses, etc.). All the BLOGS acknowledge this camera takes "soft image quality pictures". The fact is that the image quality is NOT just "soft"; they're fuzzy, blurry and downright lousy. Pentax told me just to Photoshop all my pictures or shoot everything in RAW. OUCH! For this much $$$, you can definitely do MUCH BETTER than a K10D! Do your homework! Read more
