Summary: First know it uses AA batteries. You are never far from more. The 8x Energizers have lasted more than 800 pics so far. Easy lens swapping from earlier K mounts gives you a great base. Great for point and shoot or technical set your self work. Way more camera for the money than the department store Canon or Nikon. A 5 star all the way around. The second one I have gifted.
Pros: Full featured camera, manual and automatic shooting, user friendly buttons and menus, crisp sharp photos full of great detail, low noise during low light/high ISO shooting, 12,800 ISO as a last resort when shooting in poor lighting.
Cons: Loud shake reduction causes a lot of noise during video recording.
Summary: I have researched digital SLR entry level cameras extensively and compared the Pentax K-S with the Canon xs. The Pentax proved to be better built and had a much better feel in the hand. I wanted to buy a Canon because that is all I have ever owned. The Pentax takes excellent photographs of my very active 14 month old grandson. Excellent auto-focus with a higher ISO range than any camera I looked at. Amazon shipped it to me expeditiously with total satisfaction!
Summary: I got this camera two weeks ago (an early Christmas present for myself). Last week I took it to Disneyland for its first big test, and I'm happy to report that it passed with flying colors. The camera feels really good in my hand(s), solid, and ready. It powers up quickly so I didn't miss a shot. And the pictures were terrific in bright sunlight and in low light situations as well.
Summary: So far I am very happy with my K-X. Such a welcome departure from my point and shoot Nikon. Wow, you press the shutter release and it takes a pic, no waiting.. This is how I remember an SLR. I am still learning the controls on the K-X, but everything seems to be as advertised. It feels great to be back in the SLR world. Pictures are very sharp, I am impressed. Auto focus is better then I expected.
Update: went dead in the water after 16 months of use. Avoid.

Summary: Update: The original 5-star review I wrote in November 2010 follows below. The revised 1-star review is based on a sudden and total failure of this camera after just 16 months of operation (during which I used it to take around 6500 images). It simply stopped working while I was taking pictures on a clear, calm spring day.
