Summary: Pentax's good and easy settings are comfortable in use. If you must test and try several possibilities for best results - when using k-x - you don't need to do this with your ist DS. 6mp are enough for beginners or photographers who intend to make posters not bigger as 10 x 15 " excellent color saturation very good sharpness still with 18-55 II at f 8-11 excellent contrast very highly recommended :-)
Sturdy, well built but does not take cards higher ...

Summary: Sturdy, well built but does not take cards higher than 512 MB, for today standards it is not functional. I returned the item but have not heard from the supplier. I have a nice Pentax Macro lens waiting for a good body.
Summary: The overal build, body operation and lense quality is superb. Unless you have some very specific needs from a dSLR when comparing features, this camera can win your heart easily. It is backward compatible with virtually every lense Pentax and third party companies have made for Pentax cameras. The viewfinder is comparable to that of the Canon 20D, and the DS really supports manual focusing unlike most other digital SLR's. The DL follows closely.
Summary: I have always been a 35 MM camera guy and Pentax was my brand. I have several lenses, auto and manual and was looking for a Pentax DSLR to use them with. A new camera was out of the question because of the price so I bid and won this great camera. I found the older SD cards for it and was able to update the firmware in the camera and use larger capacity cards and SDHC. It is a great camera for me to learn DSLR photography as opposed to film. I am one happy camper!
Summary: I was replacing an old Pentax Spotmatic because of the multiple lenses I own. The 1stD body looked like a great replacement and the used price was reasonable. The only problem was it was advertised as accepting older lenses but didn't hint that a adapter was needed for the screw type lenses. The camera body was like new and after getting an adapter for the lenses, works beautifully.
s\Still the best 6 MP camera for basic still photography. (No Video)

Summary: I had a Pentax 1st DS as my first DSLR and I loved it. It is MUCH better built and had a significantly brighter finder than the competition. I shoot lots of manual focus long telephoto pictures of birds. Even at 6 MP the Pentax makes beautiful 16 x 20 inch prunts suitable for framing and hanging. I shot 30,000+ exposures with my first Pentax 1st DS. It got damaged by a hard physical impact to the corner of the LCD.
Decent camera, but there are better alternatives these days

Summary: It's a decent beginner's DSLR, lightweight, good image quality when shooting RAW (JPEG looks a bit over-processed). Takes pretty much any lens, including fully manual M42s (with an adapter), but be aware that KAF3 lenses with the AF driven by a motor in the lens rather than the screw drive in the body will NOT autofocus on it - you need a K10D, K20D, K7 or K5 to use them. Big (not like baby Canons) and bright viewfinder, which can actually be used for manual focusing.
A very good camera. Awesome value for the money and well worth purchasing!

Summary: I bought this camera for my son, a buddying professional photographer. This camera is a step-down from a Pentax my wife uses in her work and one my son fell in love with. Needless to say, my son is thrilled he has a top-quality product and will do everything he needs it to do, at least at this time in his life and career. As far as how it compares to others? Hard to say but while doing my pre-buy research I thought this camera was the 'best bang for my buck'.
