An oldie but a goodie! Great camera! Great price!

  • Summary: I have always been a 35 MM camera guy and Pentax was my brand. I have several lenses, auto and manual and was looking for a Pentax DSLR to use them with. A new camera was out of the question because of the price so I bid and won this great camera. I found the older SD cards for it and was able to update the firmware in the camera and use larger capacity cards and SDHC. It is a great camera for me to learn DSLR photography as opposed to film. I am one happy camper!

s\Still the best 6 MP camera for basic still photography. (No Video)

3shoper, Ebay

  • Summary: I had a Pentax 1st DS as my first DSLR and I loved it. It is MUCH better built and had a significantly brighter finder than the competition. I shoot lots of manual focus long telephoto pictures of birds. Even at 6 MP the Pentax makes beautiful 16 x 20 inch prunts suitable for framing and hanging. I shot 30,000+ exposures with my first Pentax 1st DS. It got damaged by a hard physical impact to the corner of the LCD.

Decent camera, but there are better alternatives these days

gkolesnik, Ebay

  • Summary: It's a decent beginner's DSLR, lightweight, good image quality when shooting RAW (JPEG looks a bit over-processed). Takes pretty much any lens, including fully manual M42s (with an adapter), but be aware that KAF3 lenses with the AF driven by a motor in the lens rather than the screw drive in the body will NOT autofocus on it - you need a K10D, K20D, K7 or K5 to use them. Big (not like baby Canons) and bright viewfinder, which can actually be used for manual focusing.

A very good camera. Awesome value for the money and well worth purchasing!

  • Summary: I bought this camera for my son, a buddying professional photographer. This camera is a step-down from a Pentax my wife uses in her work and one my son fell in love with. Needless to say, my son is thrilled he has a top-quality product and will do everything he needs it to do, at least at this time in his life and career. As far as how it compares to others? Hard to say but while doing my pre-buy research I thought this camera was the 'best bang for my buck'.

Watch for "Hints" in listing

charlespgoldwing, Ebay
7 October 2010
  • Summary: Listing stated the camera took pictures, but had developed a purple hue. When I received the camera and tried to take pictures, I got a "purple hue" because the sensor did not register the picture. In other words, the camera did not take pictures. The Pentax repair facility has estimated it will cost $340 to repair the camera.

Great used DSLR for experienced photograpers or new.

  • Summary: I started using Pentax cameras and lenses about 1980s, and had a happy 15 years with them. I took 10 years off from hobby photography then got use of a friend's ist D about 2006. I eventually wanted my own and price/performance led me to the ist DS recently. It's a fantastic camera that will run current "kit" lenses (zoom, autofocus) very well.

Pentax 1ST DS slr camera, lenses & accessories GREAT!

gbork, Ebay
26 June 2010
  • Summary: After using the simple point & shoot digitals, this Pentax is in a class by itself. Believe used by a pro-photographer in past due to extensive accessories and lens combinations. As such, will take me some time to get up to speed on use application, exposures, and full capacity of all the features. However, also believe this is a camera kit that will not be easily passed by with techno upgrades.

The Pentax *ist DS - A great starter DSLR

ingservicio, Ebay
20 June 2010
  • Summary: Although this camera doesn't have anti-shake, or the resolution and preview screen size of modern DSLR's, there are a lot of features to make this attractive to someone moving up from a point'n'shoot or a film SLR. 1. It is compact and not too heavy, considering it has a metal frame. 2. It uses easily available AA batteries, (alkalines get gobbled up fairly quickly, but can be used in a pinch), 2500mAH or better NiMH will give you around 200 shots per charge. 3.

  • Excerpt: This was a very good camera for how cheap it was, and one that I didn't have to worry about keeping pretty all of the time. I loved the quality of the photos.
  • Pros: Great high ISO, small files, easy to use, small and compact, AA batteries
  • Cons: Very slow, almost to the point of irritation sometimes, small LCD to today's standards
