Covering a range from 25-300mm, the Panasonic Lumix ZS1 is a great companion, whether you're going out for a walk or on a long trip. Panasonic took a few simple steps to make the ZS1's interface easier to use, and the results will appeal to most users. What I liked most was having a zoom lens that was long enough to encompass my vision: allowing me to shoot both very wide-angle and reach out a little further than normal with a 300mm-equivalent zoom. Panasonic's compact contender lacks many manual adjustments, but shoots well for its size. There’s an old saying in photography—the best camera is the one you have with you. Meaning something is always better than nothing for capturing snapshots. That said, while we all have cell phones with built-in cameras, for any function other than quickly sharing photos with another mobile handset or via online outlet, quality is pretty poor. Read more

    • Extremely compact; good photo quality; 12x wide-angle zoom; attractive screen
    • Few manual adjustments; proprietary connections; no HD video; forget ISO 1600 and high sensitivity setting

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 is a bit of a mixed bag, but we feel that its impressive strengths outweigh its petulant flaws. We weren’t crazy about the Lumix DMC-ZS1’s interface or design, and features were not as extensive as we would have hoped for. However, the Lumix DMC-ZS1’s 12x optical zoom and 25mm wide-angle lens made us smile, especially since we weren’t forced to continuously back away into oblivion in order to fit an entire building into the frame. • Great bright light image quality. Easy to use menus. Excellent zoom and wide-angle lens combo.
    • Lame design. Difficult low light behavior. Poor Playback mode.

If you can do without HD video with stereo sound, then the TZ6 is a great alternative to the TZ7. However, the narrow viewing angles on its screen make it very difficult to see if you're holding it above the heads of a crowd. Read more

    • Well-built, Easy to handle, Powerful intellingent automatic mode, Zoom available in video, Good image quality up to 400 ISO
    • No HD video, Mode scroll wheel slips round too easily, Heavy and bulky, Narrow viewing angles on the screen, No manual modes

The DMC-TZ6 offers a good mix of features, apart from its limited manual control. So, if you’re quite happy for your camera to make most of the shooting settings for you, then this model will deliver the goods under most shooting conditions. If you want HD movies and a few extras, then it’s worth shelling out a bit more the DMC-TZ7. Read more

  1. Did everything I expected, still working - but do keep it protected in a case

I bought this camera 2.5 years ago and have hauled it around town and on vacations. I'd owned, and really liked, a prior generation Lumix, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3K , and this camera - the ZS1 - was an upgrade in many respects. The main quibble I have with this camera concerns the automatic built-in lens shutter/cover that closes when the camera is turned off or used in "replay" mode, and opens when the camera's turned on or used in "shooting" mode. It's a great camera for everyday use. It's small enough to be pocketed has a nice wide angel for Family or scenery shots as well as a powerful zoom to take pictures of shy wildlife. Since the camera is so small you'll need a steady hand for "super zoom" pictures and for low light conditions to get great results (that applies to basically all small cameras...). But that's trainable and you can always use a little tripod to help you out with that. Read more

  4. Warning!!! Poor indoor Picture Quality. Do Not Wast Your Money!!!

    Newegg

    Reviewer: camzam, Newegg

Most of the indoor photographs taken by this camera are blurred, out-of-focus, colorless, dark, poorly contrasted with poor sharpness. The flash does not produce very good light and there is a gap of time between the two flash cycles when the camera is set for red-eye reduction. This causes a majority of the pictures, taken indoors, to be of poor quality as described above. Read more

The picture quality under low light is bad, you can see blue spots allover the photo unless you use flash light. Supposely it can take really good picture of moving object, but it doesn't. The "Hight Speed Burst" can take lots of pictures in seconds, but the quality is poor, its really blurry no matter which option you choose (speed/image priority). It does take great outdoor pictures (or any place with sun light). Can take excellent photos when maximum zooming is used. Read more

Looking at a possible successor, the Panasonic DMC-TZ6K will provide enhanced user enjoyment with the addition of more personal storage space, perhaps up to 10GB. We’ll also see an increase in the TFT LCD display up to 5in. In addition, the Panasonic DMC-TZ6K will be top of the range with a CCD sensor of 14 megapixels or perhaps a combination of three lower performance CCD chips.
