Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is a 10.1 megapixel digital camera with 1/1.63-inch CCD. Among of its main features are high image quality, intuitive manual operation and creative versatility.

Features

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 features a large 1/1.63” with 10.1 megapixel Ultra-High Sensitivity which each pixel is about 45% larger than ordinary 10 megapixel camera that boosts sensitivity and saturation. In addition, newly designed circuits around the CCD improve the power supply process and provide a layered structure, while a large output buffer stabilizes the signal, further reducing noise to increase the S/N ratio by another 1.5 dB. This combines to improve the S/N ratio by a total of 3 dB. Thus, the camera delivers exquisite image quality with both excellent sensitivity and a wide dynamic range. It is equipped with 24-60mm f/2.0–2.8 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens to render even the atmosphere surrounding each and every photo image. The fully open f/2.0-2.8 aperture and iris diaphragm work together to produce stunning scenes with gentle soft focusing. Furthermore, it is capable to reproduce images shot with the lens set from 24mm to 60mm in any of three aspect ratios, 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, so you can always capture dynamic, richly expressive shots with a wide perspective. In order to produce an image with a 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio using a conventional camera, a 4:3 picture is generally cropped, so the picture does not have the maximum advantages of this unique aspect ratio. With 24mm F2.0 shots, user can take advantage of the high brightness and the setting is ideal for dimly lit scenes that require greater exposure, such as deep, natural forests, dimly lit historic buildings, and artwork displays. Meanwhile, the 24mm wide-angle setting produces a viewing space that is approximately 213% that of a 35mm film camera. This setting is ideal for capturing sweeping natural landscapes and huge buildings, and for portraying an expansive spatial effect with dynamic depth. The camera also lets user to get as close as 1 cm to your subject. When the AF mode switch on the side of the lens is set to AF Macro, or when the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode is selected, Macro Mode is activated automatically. This is ideal for taking dynamic, intricate close-ups of flowers and insects, or for rendering artwork and handicrafts in spectacular detail and rich expression. In addition, it also features 4.5x extra optical zoom function.

  • Camera for Photojournalism

I am contemplating on buying a compact digicam for use in photojournalism. I wanted something small and compact, so that it will be concealable and inconspicuous when i go on the street, yet with great image quality without the problem of the delay when pressing the shutter release. Because you know when the moment is gone, its gone. My mother bought a Canon G9, and the size and feel in my hand seemed perfect, not to mention crisp images, but then there's that shutter lag when actually taking a picture. I recently had my eye on the new Nikon Coolpix P80 , with its 18xOptical zoom lens, great image quality, and is said to be pretty fast, though slightly bigger than the G9. Could anyone tell me whether this would be a good buy for my purposes? There have been two suggestions to me: the Panasonic Lumix LX3 and the Canon IXUS 980 IS/SD990. I cannot seem to decide, I have seen great reviews for the Panasonic LX3, the wide angle (24mm-60mm equivalent)lens is real plus, but im worried about Panasonic cameras' reputation of having problems with noise. The Canon SD990 is not as wide (36mm) but great manual functions, with Canon's reputation of image quality, and lightning fast operation is what I need, although the LX3's wide angle lens will allow me opportunity to be more expressive and experiment. If anyone could give me any other options and insight on this matter, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks. JL

I would say go for the Canon camera. The Canon camera produces good quality pictures.
