Panasonic introduces the DMC-GH1 which utilizes the G Micro System – a digital interchangeable lens camera system that features professional-level functions and performance in a compact camera body. Compatible with the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the GH1 features advanced video photography functions, such as the ability to record High Definition (HD) AVCHD 1080p/24p video. In addition, the LUMIX GH1 comes with a long-zoom interchangeable lens – the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm/F4.0-5.8 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. This lens was designed to support HD movie recording and features a silent motor and continuous auto focusing (AF) capability. This allows for smaller camera body and lens sizes. The GH1 provides video recording features, including the ability to record high-resolution full HD (1920 x 1080) video at 24 fps or HD video (1280 x 720) movie at 60 fps using an AVCHD format (MPEG-4/H.264). The AVCHD format provides the benefit of doubling the HD quality recording time compared with Motion JPEG. The GH1 hosts a dedicated video record button on the back of the camera which lets users start recording videos, even while shooting still photos. The LUMIX GH1 also records video in stereo sound via Dolby Digital Stereo Creator.
See lessPanasonic’s Lumix DMC-GH1 is one of the most complete cameras we’ve tested, and one that achieves a number of ambitious goals. Unlike many rivals where features like Live View and video recording are often compromised and feel bolted-on to satisfy marketing demands, they’re core and very capable parts of the GH1’s specification. Then there’s things like the screen which is not just fully-articulated, but also large and detailed, when most cameras force you to... Read more
No matter if you're coming from a compact or DSLR, the entire user interface including menus has an intuitive and concise design and within a few days of shooting with the GH1 you'll know your way around the camera very well and will probably have developed your individual 'style of operation' using a mixture of external and Quick Menu controls. The bottom line: If you're willing to pay a premium to be on the cutting edge of digital photography and video, and as long as you don't shoot sports or in dark venues, then you'll likely love the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1. But if you're simply attracted by the not-to-be-underestimated flexibility of interchangeable lenses with autofocus and depth-of-field control for video, wait for the price to fall a few hundred bucks. The Lumix GH1 captures Pantone-precise colors and Ginsu-sharp details for both video and stills. Whatever you shoot, it offers the same bucketful of configuration options, including shutter speed, aperture, light sensitivity, and 12 style modes, like the sepia-toned Nostalgic effect. Because the GH1 is only a faux DSLR, the viewfinder doesn't show you exactly what the lens sees, but the bright digital eyepiece, descended from Panasonic's pro video cameras, is great for... If you're not looking for video recording capabilities, there's no good reason to choose the Panasonic Lumix GH1 over the far less expensive G1 introduced last year. The two cameras are nearly identical in feature set, and while the GH1 has a new image sensor, that doesn't mean it's a better image sensor. In fact, for still photos, we ran into more difficulties with color accuracy and low light performance with the new camera (though shot to shot speed has improved). Read more
The intelligent automatic mode for pictures is a charm and invites to find the limits of capabilities. Once familiar it seems to make always perfect shots. Settings are available in abundance giving enough options to do it sometimes better and mostly worse than automatic ! The movie is so good that one forgets it is a photo camera. iMovie on a Mac reads/imports without problem and the results are professional. A better user manual in stead of the rather technical listing... Read more
There is apparently a lug strap problem -- there are a lot of reports on the dpreview forum website of the lug straps breaking/falling out on the GH1. Apparently the 14-140mm lens may put too much weight on the lug straps when carried by a neck strap. I want to buy the camera and lens to add to my growing G1 system. It's a fantastic system. But I'd wait if I were you to buy untl there's a solution. Otherwise, if the lug straps break, the camera will fall to the ground... Read more or see product
This camera replaced a Canon 30D with "L-Glass". I trust the camera enough to shoot a wedding reception with an off camera Flash. My initial attempts at video are encouraging. It's a whole new ball game shooting video with a DSLR-like camera body. A tripod is nearly a must. For stills, in camera distortion correction is outstanding DXO applies very little correction to the output. Read more
First of all, I bought a G1 when it was released just a while back (read my review too). It was love at first sight and till now I still absolutely adore it. It's cute, light, takes great stills and best of all - it was extremely FUN to use. The interface was very user-friendly and the iA mode kept things simple for my point & shoot moments. It was HARD not to like the G1! Anyway, a few months later Panasonic announced the GH1. I was excited. Full HD videos in that... Read more or see product
