Excerpt: This is a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ 40 camera . This camera model should be a follower from the well known Panasonic Lumix FZ38/35. The lens, are DC VARIO ELMARIT. It is a 24x optical zoom and super zoom and I have to warn you that is not the most portable camera in the world if you know what I mean. When Panasonic announced this model, they said that it will have, advanced manual controls and that is obvious when you see the camera .
Excerpt: I've owned the FZ-40 for 6 days. As an active traveler, I have used several different cameras. You really can't go wrong with any of the mega-zoom point and shoots - they all have their pros and cons. However, the Panasonic FZ-40 is probably as good as P&S's will get with the current technology. Some day someone will figure out how to get a bigger and better sensor to work with a mega-zoom lens, but until then, the FZ-40 is my choice.
Summary: Love the light weight and the picture quality. Took pictures of birds on my bird feeder and close ups of flowers in my garden as soon as my camera came and they all came out clear with vivid color. Even took pictures of the "big moon" we experienced shortly after I bought the camera, even with the telephoto wide open and no tripod to steady the camera the pictures were beautiful and clear.
Excerpt: The optics are excellent. Very sharp at all lengths and all apertures. Stabilization is incredible (compensates 2-3 stops). Decent apertures (2.8 to 5.2). Battery life is very good. Handling also is above average. It has the usual limitations of a compact camera though; poor high ISO performance and slow autofocus. Also, the software could be much better, for example, allowing you to use the "scene modes" combined with the PASM modes, e.g.
Excerpt: Complete, light, easy to handle, can actually substitute an entire camera + lenses set. I found the lens particularly effective, even in low lights with good gain due to the stabiliser action. If compared with other bridge cameras I used so far, I appreciate the improvement in the sharpness of the image in the viewfinder. Unfortunately it is not possible to use an external flash.
Summary: I am very happy with this camera over all, but I suffered a great disappointment on the first day of the trip (to Borneo) I bought it for -- "write error on disk", this after 83 pictures stored on that card. I rushed to buy another card. Worked great for 26 pictures, then the same error. When I returned to the US I called phone support and the response was, Well, did you format the card? I asked, please show me where in the documentation it says I should format the card?
Summary: This camera has all the features I had been looking for a camera with a 24x zoom. In addition it came with a large numbervof useful accessories. I much prefer Panasonic Lumix to Canon and Nikon for it's quality and features. This camera is exceptionally light and easy to use!
