While many cameramakers decide between form and function, the Lumix DMC-FX01 features plenty of both. Compact and stylish, it is both comfortable to use and easy to handle, while features such as a 28mm wide angle lens and 3.6x zoom extend the camera's functionability. CNET felt the lens didn't quite hold up to the 23mm lenses found on competing models, however. The camera does pack several handy features. The DMC-FX01 features two image stabilization options: MEGA and High Sensitivity. The MEGA mode corrects the effect of shaky hands or unsteady stances, while High Sensitivity mode makes shooting at high ISOs even easier. A self timer and 2 continuous shooting modes further extend the creative possibilities. PopPhoto found the various features and controls relatively easy to use and well-located.

Because there is no viewfinder, the LCD is the only way to preview shots. PhotographyBlog enjoyed the fact that the LCD does have a high angle mode, which allows the display to be seen easily even when the camera is held overhead. Power LCD mode increases brightness, and 100% scene coverage means no accidentally clipped feet or heads. PopPhoto notes that the camera reacts remarkably quickly, especially in AF mode, yet doesn't wear too heavily on the battery. Additionally, a wide collection of pre set modes was a strong point, with settings such as Food, Fireworks and Self Portrait in addition to the old standbys like Night and Portrait. Selecting a preset mode automatically adjusts exposure and white balance, taking all the guesswork out of tricky shots. Small cameras don't have to be light on features, and the DMC-FX01 is proof. Compact to take anywhere, but full featured enough to suffice in most normal situations, the DMC-FX01 is a well rounded camera at a reasonable price.
