Good camera except for the excessive noise reduction.

Summary: Sadly the noise reduction is so aggressive it ruins the quality of the image. Colour rendition is good. The wide angle "21 mm" lens is very good. If you are a pixel peeper you will be disappointed. If you just want snapshots this may be a good choice.
Excerpt: Yes this is a waterproof shockproof camera, so can be taken into abusive environments...and it has impressive features - great macro mode, 21mm wide angle lens and 60fps video.BUT if you are expecting better quality images than usual for this class of cameras, forget it. The JPEG images are VERY soft, overprocessed and not good for anything larger than 4x6 print. There is also annoying intermittent shutter lag (? due to camera having trouble focusing).
Summary: The camera is fine. It's a bit heavy but that helps it feel solid. Picture quality is good. Flip screen is novel. My problem is you can NOT take stills while capturing video anymore. This feature was available on the TG-830 and I'm disappointed it has been removed from this newer version. You can capture lesser quality stills after the fact but I know I won't bother doing that as it is time consuming. I am returning the camera because this feature is missing.
Summary: I'm not comfortable taking pictures in our kayak with the GH2 or D-Lux 6. I was interested in a rugged camera without GPS, WiFi, altimeter, compass and other futilities. My 10y-old son is using a Tough 3000 and my 8y-old got a TG-820 for Christmas. I pre-ordered the 850 in January because of its two good features: 21mm and tilt-screen. I received it end of March . The next day I returned it. First disappointment is the feeling.
Excerpt: I bought this camera mainly for taking pics and vids when snorkeling. During 7 days in the Indian Ocean, I took more than thousand pictures + hundred videos. This is my experience with this camera: - Very good video quality (under water). - Very bad sound quality (overall)! The zoom motor noise and other disturbing noises are always recorded on the video, which is very frustrating. - Pictures quality under water: Good when the subject is not moving too fast.
Excerpt: This was easy to set up and its two automatic settings make it easy to use. I was disappointed that no instruction book comes with it. It has to be ordered for $[$]plus shipping and tax. The instructions are on a CD included with the kit and they are online, but even a small camera like this can be complicated. There is nothing like reading a book for best comprehension. One big problem is the flimsy covering for the batteries.
Pros: Easy to Use, Small / Compact
Cons: Complicated Controls, Limited Zoom, No Viewfinder, Poor Image Stabilization
