8 megapixel now, several improvements, and still shockproof, freezeproof and waterproof

30 November 2011
  • Summary: The attractive ultra-compact water, shock and shockproof 8-megapixel Stylus 850 SW is perfect for those who love to take their camera outdoors without having to baby it. The camera can take a beating and you can even use it underwater, down to a depth of ten feet. It has the same features as standard consumer models, which means it is useful anywhere and not just as a sports camera. We like the internal zoom, the excellent 2.5-inch LCD with its very wide viewing angle.
  • Pros: Attractively styled sports and outdoor camera, Snorkeling possible with 10 feet depth limit, Inherent waterproofing provides peace of mind when handling in/around water, Can survive 5-foot drops and 14 degree temperature!, Superb wide-angle, high-res 2.5-inch LCD, Pre-capture movie mode, microSD adapter included, Very good underwater macro mode, LED illumination, Optional deepwater housing
  • Cons: Strictly point & shoot

  • Conclusion: Colorful and durable, that's what the Stylus 850SW is. Not only is it waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof, the Olympus Stylus 850SW is compatible with two kinds of memory cards and comes with an LED lamp which you can actually use for various purposes. This point-and-shoot solid (except the plastic tripod mount) camera may not have any manual controls but offers plenty of scene modes and photo features to make your pictures come out better on screen, or on print.
  • Pros: Waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof and comes in many colors!, Compatible with both xD-Picture and microSD cards, Very usable LCD outdoors and indoors, with backlighted buttons, LED illuminator is useful for macro shots (and low-light focusing too), Helpful built-in guide and help system, Perfect Shot Preview to preview effects before snapping, Shadow Adjustment brightens photos and Perfect Fix playback tools
  • Cons: No manual controls, Slowish lens without optical image stabilization, Below average battery life, Plastic tripod mount and tiny, packed buttons, Noise + detail loss at high ISO speeds
