Olympus SP-590UZ

Tech2
16 January 2010
  • Excerpt: With the roster of each manufacturer's Super Zoom line up burgeoning, there's the constant pressure to one up each other where specifications are concerned. The predominant spec that's being hyper-extended in this sector, is undoubtedly the Optical Zoom capability, and in that department the Olympus SP-590UZ is ahead of the rest with a whooping 26x optical zoom. The question then is, does the bolstering of the spec sheet come at the price of quality?

  • Conclusion: Olympus SP-590 UZ Megazoom digital camera Mega zoom cameras have been under a lot of pressure for a small period of time, mainly caused by the launch of affordable entry-level DSLR cameras. The manufacturer reckoned on a quicker switch from compact to DSLR, making the mega zoom segment superfluous. However, this turned out differently in practice.

Olympus SP-590 UZ

  • Conclusion: I find with these larger cameras there is less difference in the quality of the photos they take. Therefore whether you buy the Olympus SP-590UZ in preference to other similar cameras is likely to come down how you fell about the features and handling. Overall I like this camera and there is little to put me off buying.
  • Pros: Long lens - start up times
  • Cons: Purple fringing - sharper images when zoom is not used

The Olympus SP-590UZ is equipped with a massive 26x zoom

Good Gear Guide.au
25 February 2010
  • Summary: Olympus’s SP-590UZ does a good job of delivering some of the advantages of a larger SLR camera without an interchangeable lens system. Shots taken with the massive 26x zoom lens are almost always crisp and clear, and it comes equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor.
  • Pros: Incredible 26x zoom is versatile, good macro and super-macro modes
  • Cons: Lens has some imperfections, shots at ISO 800 and above suffer from noise

Olympus SP-590 UZ

PhotoReview
1 April 2009
  • Summary: A compact digicam with the longest optical zoom range currently available plus a special Bird Watching mode.Twenty-six times optical zoom is a big ask for a compact, small-sensor digicam, even with optical image stabilisation built-in. Yet that's what Olympus is offering in its 12-megapixel SP590 UZ model.
  • Cons: You want to shoot raw files (this camera is restricted to JPEG capture)., You require high performance levels in dim or contrasty lighting., You want to shoot widescreen or high-definition video., You want to shoot fast-moving action.
