What do Olympus' 6-megapixel "Easy & Fun" compacts offer and which is the best?
30 November 2011
Excerpt: Let's say you want to spend under US$200 for a new digital camera and have always liked Olympus. You're in luck because this past summer the company announced four new FE-Series point-and-shoot digital cameras. They are all in Olympus' "Easy & Fun" category, a class of inexpensive cameras that are meant to combine stylish design and a friendly user interface to give consumers, and especially those new to digicams, a fulfilling digital experience.
Pros: Very low price for a good 6.0 megapixel camera, Higher-res screen than its pricier siblings, Uses standard AA batteries, Jack for optional A/C adapter, Comes with rechargeable AAs and charger, Has 640 x 480 movies with sound and zoom, TruePic TURBO processor and image stabilization combine for great shots, 22MB of internal memory to tide you over, Great balance of low price and features, Sleeker and lighter than the others, TruePic TURBO processor and image stabilizat...
Cons: No audio, Doesn't come with rechargeable batteries or charger, 320 x 240 video without sound or zoom, Lack of TruePic TURBO processor visible in lesser picture quality, Limited ISO range (400 max), Only 10MB onboard meemory, No audio clips or voice recording, Heavier and bulkier than FE-190, No audio clips or voice recording, Only has 320 x 240 video mode (with sound and zoom, though)
Excerpt: With so many options available in the budget digicam market, it's perhaps the biggest segment of the entire consumer digital camera range in India. It can get very confusing for a consumer who wants to pick up a digital camera as he will have to end up questioning himself on his exact technical requirements, the situations in which he will be using the camera and also on how much will he compromise on quality just to save up on that extra money.
Summary: The FE-170 is one of several additions to Olympus' FE series of entry-level point-n-shoot models. An entry-level camera, which enables new users to shoot clear, crisp images with ease. The FE-170's optional water-resistance case provides worry-free fun at the beach and pool; users can capture photos while swimming to 10 feet below the surface. Other features include a large 2.5-inch LCD, 3x optical zoom lens, and Digital Image Stabilization.
Conclusion: The Olympus FE-170 is priced about right. It can take decent pictures when the light is good, but struggles more in lowlight. Shutter lag is also an issue with the camera. If you can pay more there are better cameras to be found, but if this camera fits into your budget then I would say go ahead and buy as long as you are prepared to accept its limitations.
