Olympus Evolt E-500

PC Magazine
7 April 2007
  • Conclusion: The Olympus Evolt E-500 is a very good entry-level D-SLR that falls just shy of greatness.
  • Pros: Large, clear 2.5-inch LCD. Supports a variety of shooting formats, even multiple formats simultaneously.
  • Cons: Controls could be better organized. Image quality could be better. Weak burst mode.

Olympus E-500

best4reviews.com
25 December 2006
  • Summary: The E-500 is packed with kit too much to go over in detail here. Suffice to say, this is as comprehensively specified D-SLR as you’re likely to want (or need) and at £600 (for the standard kit that includes the 14-45mm lens used in the test) it’s great value. If you’re looking for a compact, lightweight D-SLR that packs a real punch in almost all departments you would do far worse than stopping your search right here.
  • Pros: Lightweight and easy to use, excellent image quality, comprehensive control options.
  • Cons: Styling is a bit on the chunky side.

Olympus EVOLT E-500

MobileTechReview.com
6 July 2006
  • Conclusion: Good times for dSLR shoppers. It's really hard to go wrong with any of the intro offerings from Olympus, Canon, Nikon or Pentax. The EVOLT E-500 does give a lot of bang for the buck, especially if you go with the 2 lens bundle. It has some of the most user-friendly controls we've seen, that won't scare the pants off of point and shoot folks, feels good in the hand, looks and feels well made and it takes very good photos.
  • Pros: Excellent resolution, great color (accurate and vivid), Supersonic Wave Filter keeps the sensor clean, pretty fast continuous shot mode, lightweight and compact yet still has substance.
  • Cons: Viewfinder is small. 4/3 might be a put-off for traditionalists. Shots over ISO 400 aren't great. Startup time isn't instant (even when automatic sensor cleaning is disabled).

  • Conclusion: The Olympus Evolt E-500 is a compact, easy-to-use digital SLR camera with a broad feature set for its class and very nice photo quality overall.
  • Pros: Compact design; strong autofocus performance even in low-light situations; intuitive and easy-to-navigate menu system; wide range of automated and manual features to appeal to both serious hobbyists and curious SLR newcomers.
  • Cons: Unreliable automatic white balance in some conditions; slow start-up time when dust reduction is enabled; compatible Zuiko lenses don't indicate focal distance.

  • Conclusion: Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera When the Olympus E-300 first appeared in the market, many raised an eyebrow. Was this the camera that would truly make a mark for the FourThirds system? It wasn't. With the E-500 digital reflex Olympus gives it another shot, one that in my opinion is far more realistic than the last. First of all, because the Olympus E-500 eyes as a regular D-SLR.

Olympus E-500 / EVOLT E-500 review with Zuiko Digital 14-45mm f3.5~5.6

Camera Labs
1 February 2006
  • Summary: On the downside though, the anti-dust process imposes a serious delay every time the camera powers up, the motorised manual focusing (and lack of anti-shake options) could seriously infuriate some photographers, the lack of detail when zooming during playback is disappointing, while the view through the viewfinder has to be one of the smallest from any digital SLR; it's also a missed opportunity not to automatically switch off the monitor when you go to compose a shot.
  • Pros: Unique and effective anti-dust system, Great value twin lens bundle, Good resolution and overall image quality, Detailed shooting information for a budget DSLR
  • Cons: Motorised manual focusing not very tactile, View through viewfinder looks very narrow, Screen doesn't turn off when you compose, Lens selection not as broad as major rivals
