Olympus E-400

best4reviews.com
26 October 2007
  • Summary: This is a camera replete with much clever stuff packed into a tiny body. A worry is the not so svelte price; the twin lens kit including a 14-42mm optic (used here) and a very compact 40 to 150mm (80 to 300mm in 35mm terms) lens retails at around £850. That’s far too expensive for an “entry level” model and particularly so when there are cheaper 10-megapixels models on the shop shelves already.
  • Pros: Impressive image quality, ease of use and handling (despite compact size), nice kit lens, and it's responsive.
  • Cons: Pentamirror viewfinder is gloomy and small.

  • Conclusion: Olympus E-400 digital reflex camera It was surprising to find out that a compact digital SLR camera like the Olympus E-400, which finally shows the compact possibilities offers by the FourThirds system is not available world wide, but at first only on the European market. Olympus has already had a lot of comment about this, not least from American consumers, who find this decision incomprehensible.

Olympus E-400 with Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 ED

Camera Labs
1 November 2006
  • Summary: As the world’s smallest and lightest digital SLR to date, the Olympus E-400 is certainly a very compact product – as we mentioned on the Design page , it even manages to make the Canon 400D / XTi look quite hefty. But while miniaturisation is always technically impressive, reduced dimensions signal alarm bells in terms of comfort and usability. Thankfully there’s no cause for concern with the E-400 though.
  • Pros: Small and light without compromising comfort, Very effective anti-dust system, Highest resolution Four Thirds body so far, Easy access to settings
  • Cons: Noise more obvious than rival DSLRs, Right strap eyelet can dig into your hand, Motorised manual focus (like all Four Thirds), Only available in Europe (but the UK can ship!)

  • Summary: The Olympus E-400's compact size might be enough to set it apart from the competition but once a protruding lens is attached it isn't exactly pocket sized. That said, it could be the final nail in the coffin for bridge cameras like the Sony R1 and the Samsung Pro815, as it is lighter and smaller and offers all the creative benefits that an interchangeable lens camera can offer.

  • Summary: The lack of a grip makes this very handsome camera a little slippery to hold. The finish is a step up from the E-500, but the handling is perhaps a step backwards. The image quality from our sample was good, though some pictures suffered blown highlight detail. Have had my 410 now for about a month to get back into photography after a 20 year lapse.

Olympus E-400 DSLR Review

ePHOTOzine
1 December 2006
  • Summary: With lots of picture modes and a generally simplified body control system, this is a DSLR that beginners can pick up and use. It produces very good results, and with a high 10Mp resolution can equally be used for landscapes and portraits. The autofocus is fast and accurate, but lacks sophisticated tracking and selection options. The ISO range is decent, but gets very noisy at 1600, even with noise reduction.
  • Pros: Lightweight, Good colour and sharpness, Fast and accurate autofocus, Dual format, xD and CF, Good shutter speed range, Lots of picture modes for beginners, Ultrasonic CCD cleaning, Good Exposure Compensation range, Built in flash works well
  • Cons: ISO range slightly limited, Some features hidden in menus, Not great grip, No PC-synch socket, Buffer fills up quickly, Slow to save RAW, Built in flash limited in power

Olympus E400 Review

LetsGoDigital
24 January 2013
  • Conclusion: De Olympus E-400 is mij in de praktijk prima bevallen.

Olympus E400 Review

  • Conclusion: Olympus E-400 dijital fotoğraf makinesi incelememiz sırasında gayet olumlu izlenimler bıraktı.
