The most basic DLSR for a good price!

  • Excerpt: I have had my Nikon D40 now for about four years and I love it! It was the very basic DSLR you could get in Nikon and still pay a great price on it. Years later, it has gone WAY down on price because there are tons of new models of Nikons. I like it because it is not too big and it is a good camera for amateurs whether you are just a hobbyist or wanting to better your professional photgraphy skills.

Good Starter Camera

photofun, PhotoAlley.com
4 May 2009
  • Summary: This is good camera for a beginner. It's too light for me, but maybe good for someone just starting out or who just wants a better snap shot than a compact digital. It's decent for snap shots or just playing around, but I would not recommend it for someone who is serious about photography.
  • Pros: Easy To Use
  • Cons: Cheap Feel, Slow Focus, Too light

Auto focus feature fails

FMW, PhotoAlley.com
20 March 2009
  • Summary: The kit came with two lenses. The larger zoom lens auto focus feature failed right after the warranty ended so now it has to be used on manual focus.
  • Pros: Bright LCD, Comfortable Controls, Easy To Use, Great Image Quality

Great, with some limitations

teamstan, PhotoAlley.com
29 July 2008
  • Summary: I've had the D40 for about a year, and pair it with the accompanying kit lens, a 55-200mm zoom lens and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime lens. With the zoom lens, the D40 is great, but when you open it to 1.4, the 3 focus areas REALLY puts a limit on how much you can reframe. I bought it as an upgrade from my point and shoot, but had I known that I'd have to buy super expensive AF-S lenses, I would have made a better initial investment and gotten at least the D80 or D200.
  • Pros: Comfortable Controls, Quiet, Small Lag Time, Strong Construction
  • Cons: Barely decent metering, Expensive lenses, Exposed LCD, Not the greatest WB

Nikon D80

teksmith, epinions.com
14 February 2008
  • Summary: While I am a big fan of Nikon, you would be better off staying away from the D80. Look at the D40/D40x, D200, or the D300.
  • Pros: Color, Focus, Burst Mode, Wireless Flash Support, Auto ISO, View Finder, Ergonomics
  • Cons: Metering, No CF
