Excerpt: This camera is a great for a beginner photographer, I had this Camera since 2008 , and it has all the basic functions to take pictures. I enjoy using this camera and then I upgraded it since i became more professional.
Excerpt: I have had my Nikon D40 now for about four years and I love it! It was the very basic DSLR you could get in Nikon and still pay a great price on it. Years later, it has gone WAY down on price because there are tons of new models of Nikons. I like it because it is not too big and it is a good camera for amateurs whether you are just a hobbyist or wanting to better your professional photgraphy skills.
Summary: This is good camera for a beginner. It's too light for me, but maybe good for someone just starting out or who just wants a better snap shot than a compact digital. It's decent for snap shots or just playing around, but I would not recommend it for someone who is serious about photography.
Summary: I've had the D40 for about a year, and pair it with the accompanying kit lens, a 55-200mm zoom lens and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 prime lens. With the zoom lens, the D40 is great, but when you open it to 1.4, the 3 focus areas REALLY puts a limit on how much you can reframe. I bought it as an upgrade from my point and shoot, but had I known that I'd have to buy super expensive AF-S lenses, I would have made a better initial investment and gotten at least the D80 or D200.
Pros: Comfortable Controls, Quiet, Small Lag Time, Strong Construction
Cons: Barely decent metering, Expensive lenses, Exposed LCD, Not the greatest WB
