Excerpt: I bought the J3 as an upgrade to the J1, my guess is that there are other people who are considering the same, so I'll start this review by listing the pros vs cons of J1 vs J3 and then I'll type up my conclusion. J3 pros vs J1 - Better Screen - Higher resolution sensor - Tighter build quality - Multi-selector dial is now stiffer - Image review can be turned off - Wi-Fi capable - History Menu includes last settings used - Better flash mechanism - shooting modes for...
Summary: I have the Nikon 1 J1, and added this body to my system when its price fell (upon announcement of the new J4). Since I have both, it is possible for me to compare both directly. Both are capable cameras capable of producing nice pictures, but I still prefer the J1. Why is the J1 better? It is slightly more rugged and has better battery life. The J1's menus make more sense to me, and are more easily accessed.
Summary: I am by no means a professional or experienced photographer, however I've recently began to take my photography much more seriously. This camera was a HUGE upgrade from my last Nikon Coolpix digital camera, and it is absolutely worth every dollar. It has fantastic features like Best Moment Capture which is great for capturing group shots or action shots, and also Continuous Shooting Mode.
A great little compact camera, but not much room for improvement.

Summary: I am an amateur photographer, at best. Having owned a couple of DSLRs before making the switch to this compact camera system. I love its low light performance, fast focusing, custom shot selections, and the selection of lenses that are available. What I dislike is its lack of options, when it comes to the flash, the microphone, and a remote shutter control.
Summary: I originally had a Canon point and shoot that I liked very much, but something was always missing... depth of field. A friend brought is Nikon 1 J3 to work to take some videos. I got to use it for a few minutes and that is all it took for to get hooked on this compact DSLR. I was able to play around with it this past weekend and it did everything that I wanted! The pictures that I took came out great and I love the slow motion that it is able to do.
Summary: An excellent camera, almost too compact. I purchased an attachment to make it easier to hold and it makes firmly holding the camera much easier. The only negative comment I have is withg the shutter release. It fits so smoothly in the camera case that I find it difficult to know when by finger is toiuching it. There needs to be a small projection on top of the release so you will know when your finger is in contact with the shutterr release.
