The Nikon D70 was precisely the camera that the photography world needed this year. A revolution began in 2003 with the Canon EOS Digital Rebel -- its $899 sticker, its 6.3-megapixel sensor, and its attitude of "Everybody into the digital SLR pool; the water's fine!" The question for '04 was how quickly a camera maker would seize on this revolutionary fervor, and add some sophistication, features, fine-tuning, and, well, "maturity" to what the D Rebel had... Review based on a production Nikon D70 The D70, announced on 28th January 2004 is Nikon's answer to the new sub-$1,000 digital SLR market, its clear competition being the Canon EOS 300D (Digital Rebel) announced last August. The D70 is revealed by Nikon exactly two years since the D100, the D70 appears to share quite a lot with its sibling including a six megapixel CCD sensor and Multi-CAM900 auto focus system. Read more
- Handling ability: it is light yet substantial - Extensive options for each function - Clever layout/design - Impressive LCD screen resolution and monitor cover - Incredibly fast shutter response time Dislikes - Lowest ISO is 200 - Weak software package - Rubber buttons are somewhat annoying - Color and resolution results under par Conclusion After all of this talk, is the Nikon D70 up to snuff? I would say so. Read more
When Canon dropped their $999 bombshell (the Digital Rebel) on the d-SLR market last year, a lot of people were wondering what Nikon would/could do to counter. Canon has a lot of experience making well-performing, yet very cheap film SLRs, and they have the further advantage of being vertically integrated, making the sensor and primary processing chip used in the Digital Rebel as well. Could/can Nikon compete? The D70 answers that question with a resounding "yes". Read more

In 1999 I promised myself I would switch to digital photography once a reasonable 4 Megapixel camera was available. Well the time has come, and Nikon has provided the answer in the form of the D70 Digital SLR. The fact that it is F mount compatible (mostly), produces excellent images, and is affordable have left me with no excuse for not jumping in at this point. Read more
After having spent a few weeks with the Nikon D70, and teaching at workshops where students arrived with the camera fresh out of the box, it's clear that Nikon has fashioned a camera that will appeal to both those new to digital SLR photography and those already converted eager to use their Nikkor lenses from their film SLRs on this new digital body. I bought this camera a few weeks ago with the intention of using it as my backup/"uh-oh" camera, one that I could break and not really care too much about. The quality is decent, it does appear grainy depending on the light conditions outside. I did a small shoot recently when there was about half a foot of snow on the ground and a slight overcast and there was still a noticeable amount of grain (at least to me, friends can't tell). A very solid and reliable performer. Color balance and reproduction are superb even with the low megapixels structure compared to the norm today. Read more
This was my first DSLR camera and if you're a beginner on a budget this is a great place to start. Got it with the 18-70mm 'kit' lens and they make a great combo. If you want a great (and cheap) portrait setup grab a 50mm 1.8 as it really shines on this body. The AF is nothing flash (5 points and 1.5 fps) but I shot a lot football (Aussie rules) with this and 70-200VR and it does surprising well even just using dynamic AF mode. Read more
I bought the D70 to have a backup of my two D2x during work. The image quality is fine until 400ISO, but it decrease over, where the dinamic range is not enough in comparison with every newest camera. The viewìfinder is a "little black hole", and it's a really a cons of this body (but the later amateur cameras aren't so better...). The noise is very low, with virtually no vibrations. Af is OK, and the external flash control too. Read more
I was given a Nikon D70 as a gift. I love the autofocus - it works well in almost all situations. It has many modes which give great control when changing lighting. Mine is used in landscapes and portraits, and the clarity is beautiful. This camera is worth the price. Read more
This is my first purchase of a DSLR Camera, and it was a fantastic deal! Amazon is probably the best place to look for buying the Nikon D70. I'm a fine art photography student and in my first year at university, i've worked with the Nikon D70 before at college, so i'm used to it's functions. I can definitely say that it is a great camera to work with, and it covers more or less everything you could ask of a DSLR Camera. The quality is excellent and it's easy to handle. Read more
