l've had the D70 for 18 months now. It relaced a nikon coolpix 5700. The D70 is a well made, quick and robust camera with many useable features. My only real criticism of the D70 is that in camera shots are inherently soft and almost every picture requires some form of post processing - specifically sharpening. The latest firmware upgrade did not address this disappointing feature. Otherwise a good camera. Read more

After all of this talk, is the Nikon D70 up to snuff? I would say so. The clever design, ease of use, portability, and top-of-the-line features make the Nikon D70 hard to beat in today’s market. As Nikon’s first sub-$1000 digital SLR camera, the Nikon D70 has been streamlined to reach a more general audience in terms of price and accessibility. Adding to an already respectable line of Nikon cameras, the Nikon D70 is keeping up with its predecessors and... Read more
This camera is suitable in image quality for professional work. Do not use the automatic settings and don't shoot JPEGs, but learn how to get the most from RAW images. The Nikon will set exposure down a little bit to avoid blowing highlights, but this is with the assumption that you "develop" your images routinely with a "digital darkroom" and use capable capture software. The PC World reviewer really is wrong to downgrade the image quality rating. It produces stunning... Read more
This camera has been a superb buy with excellent photo results in high an low light conditions. There is "no" delay between pressing the button and shutter release, like in most other digital cameras. The camera performs well even in low light conditions, although the pictures becomes less crisp and shows speckles when setting the film speed to more than 1200 ESA. Read more
I bought this camera 3 years ago, and it worked beautifully until on a long trip in Yellowstone. After changing the memory card, the mirror locked up, as other posts mention, making the camera completely useless. Since I was past the warranty period, Nikon told me I would be charged, even though they had (have) a vague-enough-to-weasel-out-of service advisory out for this problem. The way the service works is to receive the camera, have a front desk monkey put it into a... Read more
Bought it new in May 04. No problems with it. No BSOD problem. Had a tough choice between the Eos Rebel Digital (300D) and the D70. D70 fit me more than the 300D did. Plus why Canon makes silver DSLRs is a mystery to me. Really looks like a cheesy P&S in silver. Just a personal preference. Compared it to a 10D a guy I know has and the D70 smoked it in our little tests. Even with my Tamron lenses pics came out ALOT better than his 10D with Canon lenses. When I heard the... Read more
After owning several digital cameras, I've finally found one that will retire with me. My last camera was the Nikon DCS620, but it was to heavy to lug around. The Nikon D70s is compact, feels great in your grip, and does it all. I'm not lying when I tell you that the lithium battery will last for days without a charge. The rear compact flash door opens easy, and accesses the card extremely fast. The large lcd screen menu is intuitive and simple. So far the only issue I... Read more
