Excerpt: I take this camera on fun things we do around where we live, in order to document our life. It works great. I have taken a beginning photography class and it works great for that. I would say this camera is a great first camera for people getting in to photography.
Pros: Easy To Use, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Fast Shutter Speed, Good Image Quality
Excerpt: As a casual photographer who takes pictures mostly when traveling I am satisfied with this camera. This is my first DSLR camera, so I can compare it only with the P&S camera that I had so far. The body of the camera is very lightweight in compare to my P&S Canon G11, but with the added 18-200mm lens it is far more heavy, which at the beginning was a problem for me since I am not used to handling such a heavy camera and could not hold it steady.
Excerpt: This is a really nice back up to the D7000. The D7000 does have its advantages: more buttons on body so you don't have to use menus, more customization, which is really nice, and, of course, a pentaprism viewfinder, an in-body motor for AF-D lenses, and the ability to program in older lenses. If you are a serious enthusiast the D5100 is probably not your first choice. But, it is a great back up for when you just want to bring a few AF-S lenses and have a great time.
Pros: Compact, Easy to Use, Good Video Quality, Great Picture Quality, Lightweight
Excerpt: I bought this camera as an upgrade to my D50 which I am keeping. It has much better resolution 16mp vs. 6 mp and faster continuous focus 4 fps vs. 2.5 fps. It has many things my D50 doesn't have including video. There are two things I miss from my D50 that the D5100 doesn't have. One is high speed flash sync and the other is a built in motor for use with older lenses like my Tamron 28-200mm.
Summary: this camera is well worth the money I spent for it, this is the first slr camera I have ever had. It is taking me awhile to get used to all the features, but picture quality is excellent. The only thing I find frustrating is having to change lenses every time I want to shoot telephoto shot. I have a Nikon L510 digital which is also excellent, with wide angle to telephoto all in one. Now I have the best of both worlds with these cameras.
