Canon 1D Mark IV vs. Nikon D3S – Autofocus Performance [Part 1]

photographybay.com
29 August 2010
  • Excerpt: We all know that the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3S are geared toward sports photographers.  While the cameras have found their way into many other photography niches, at their core, these cameras are made for shooting sports.  As an action-oriented camera, nothing defines its performance more so than its autofocus speed and accuracy.

DP Review
21 June 2010
  • Summary: In terms of versatility, the Nikon D3S is the best DSLR we've ever tested, and the image quality in ultra-low light is a major selling point. If you don't need to take advantage of the D3S's high ISO settings though, the D700/D300S offer better value.
  • Pros: Unmatched image quality at high ISO settings. Incredibly efficient sensor. A new benchmark., Excellent AF and metering performance, Compatible with virtually all Nikon AF lenses, and most MF lenses (up to 9 AI spec or later manual focus lenses can be programmed for use with the D3S), Highly customizable user interface including versatile shooting banks, 9 frames per second continuous shooting makes the D3S the fastest full-frame DSLR around, Configurable dual card slo...
  • Cons: White balance isn't brilliant in artificial lighting (but few cameras shine in this respect), AF array is smaller (as a proportion of viewfinder area) than D300S, which makes swapping between cameras awkward in some shooting situations, Vertical AF-ON button is poorly placed - very easy to press by accident, 720p, 24fps video is good, but resolution isn't as high as some competitive DSLRs, Motion JPEG video capture only. It would have been nice to have the choice of M...

Nikon D3s D-SLR Review

best4reviews.com
17 May 2010
  • Summary: This evolution of Nikon’s D3 full “FX” frame professional digital SLR brings new features such as HD movies into the frame. A new 12.1-megapixel sensor with improved circuitry allows superb image quality at very high ISO settings (ISO 102,400 in the new Hi3 boosted setting) and makes the D3s a stunning pro model. Like the D3 before it, the D3s is as close to six stars as you can get without attaining that much vaunted accolade.
  • Pros: Excellent image quality, particularly at very high sensitivities, great ergonomics, design and control layout, menu system, comprehensive feature set and HD movie capability with external audio.
  • Cons: Fastest frame rate only available in DX format mode, Price (the D3s is £800 dearer than the D3 at launch), Low light AF hunting, bulk/weight.

  • Excerpt: Sure, you may have the greatest camera gear to shoot. And yes, you may have the absolute coolest spots scouted to take those photographs from. But, we’re willing to bet you (or we) will never get to take the otherworldly photos like the ones NASA has just shared from the International Space Station mission. All shot using the Nikon D3S ($5,200) . You know, a camera available right here on planet Earth, on Amazon. Stunning.

  • Excerpt: Camera buffs can finally lay to rest all the speculation behind one of Nikon’s new flagship DSLRs, the new Nikon D3s. Tonight (Tuesday, Oct 14), Nikon introduced the first DSLR with the ability to capture high definition video (720p) using a full frame sensor. Those of you who are wondering why you can’t just use the video function on my Cyber-Shot can stop reading this, and move on to the next post.
