Conclusion: This Nikon beauty is one of the best SLR cameras you can get in the market. 14.2 megapixels, HD recording and compact and easy to carry. It is also compatible with several lenses. A great choice for your entry in the SLR world, this will complete all your requirements.
Summary: I've been a pro photographer for very many years (over 40) and very much love digital cameras which perform far better than the old 35mm film cameras. I've owned a few Nikon digital cameras; D50, D80, D300S, D5100 and currently a D3100. I've used generally a 35mm prime, 18-200 VR and currently a 16-85VR and have not used the bundled kit lens that comes with the 3100.
Summary: I bought this as a birthday gift for my 14 yr old daughter. It is a good purchase for the quality and at the same time great as an entry level especially if she wants to pursue her interest in photography..anyhow, I hope the interest would develop into a passion and hopefully with this camera that can be achieved in due time.
Summary: This Nikon is more than a beginners camera. Apart from clear shots it produces the HD movie is great. You can either point and shoot or be creative with the settings, either way you wont be disappointed.
Summary: I absolutely love this camera and have had so much fun getting to grips with it, exploring depth of field, long exposures with light and post processing my RAW images with lightroom and photoshop.. Fantastic!
Pros: The Picture quality available at an entry level dslr is fantastic and has helped me affordably move away from digital cameras and phone cameras.
Cons: No bracketing feature, or external mic input and accessories are expensive.
Good for the money but the newer D3200 is better so compare prices

Summary: This is a very good camera and is being offered at some impressively low prices. The picture quality is far better than compact cameras, so if you're moving up from a snapshot camera you will be seriously impressed. However, the newer D3200 has even better picture quality. The D3100's 14 megapixel sensor is good, but the D3200's 24 megapixel sensor is amazing.
Summary: Nikon D3100 is my first DSLR. I purchased it in feb 11 and had taken more than 2000 pics with it. Its a great camera with very good picture quality. picture quality at higher ISO is good and can actually be utilised. if u are not a pro and dont need some specific fun as i mentioned in cons, this is a perfect DSLR for anyone who need it for personal use.
Summary: had a nikon d40x for the past 2 years which gave me the dslr photography bug. felt i wanted to go a bit further so invested with this d3100. i am not disappointed and am enjoying the extra features of this model. being a complete novice to photography and well into my 50's takes a bit of getting used to but well when i feel lazy just set it to auto and get good results every time.
