When Nikon announced the D2X last year at photokina there was a good deal of anticipation about it, and a good wait that followed until it finally arrived. In the meantime, Canon countered with their EOS-1Ds Mark II, which in many ways shaped the competitive landscape. With a street price of $4999.95, Nikon’s flagship digital SLR is $3000 less than the $8000 (body only) Mark II, albeit with a smaller CMOS sensor. Has the D2X met and surpassed expectations? In my mind... Read more
It wouldn't be harsh to say that some people were disappointed with the D2H, a great body with excellent performance let down by a slightly experimental sensor which didn't perform to the same level as the rest of the camera. With the D2X Nikon has shifted to a CMOS sensor, and although not yet as clean as Canon's second generation CMOS sensors at higher sensitivities there's no doubting the amount of detail captured combined with Nikon's image processing can produce... Nikon D2X digital SLR review : When Nikon introduced the D2H reflex camera for the enhanced action/photojournalist; the world expected the camera to be followed by a D2X very promptly. This was the case with the D1 series and the Internet rumours made us expect the new flagship any minute. But while Canon reacted quickly with a fast camera equipped with high resolution, the Nikon users had to be patient and wait a bit longer until Nikon finally put the Nikon D2X on the... Read more
Corrections, added conclusion: 5/4/05 Corrections, ACR 3.1 5/6/05 Update: 10/05/05 D2xs update: 8/30/06 WT-2 comments: 1/22/07 Nikon D2x and D2xs Review Was the wait worth it? Add a comment or send Thom feedback on this article. I've added D2xs-specific comments in red. The D2xs is enough like the D2x that the bulk of the review is still valid. I haven't bothered to replace "D2x" with "D2x and D2xs" in the original portions of the review, but you can safely do so as you... Read more
I've used Nikon cameras for approximately 40 years. I typically use an F100 (film based), N80. I also have the D100. The D2x is in a class by itself. The image quality is very high for a digital. What I really appreciate about this camera is the handling and the ergonomic placement of the controls. I took it out of the box and just started using, no instructions needed. The ISO, White Balance and Quality level are grouped and easy to see. The view finder presents all... Read more
I have been shooting with the D200 for almost three years and I was only able to acquire a (used) D2x relatively cheap because of the arrival of the newer D3 model which somehow made most of the D2x owners allergic to their perfectly useable camera. Not that I'm complaining, though. As far as handling goes, I knew that the D2x blows away the D200 before I even got it (I used to own an F5); while most users find the weight a deterrent, I--on the other hand--find this as a... This is by far the best professional digital SLR out. I did a comparison with the 1Ds MkII, and Nikon won out in both print size/quality, and color rendition. It is by far superior in contrast range, and it gives you a two for one option with 12.4 mp at 5 fps, and 6.8 mp at 8 fps. Tested it for sports and nature photography, and if you know your lenses, the autofocus is unbeatable. I can see that amateurs are having trouble with lens choices, so they cannot use the... Before upgrading to the D300s, I used the D2x to take and sell nature and wildlife photographs, and as long as I kept the ISO at 400 or below, I was very happy with it. After using the D70, D2H, and D2Hs, I finally was able to purchase a used D2X from a Professional Wildlife Photographer. I have loved it since I purchased it. The only downside that I find is the high noise levels at higher ISO's and darker, night shots. I have to soften sky backgrounds when the noise... Read more
