Excerpt: I bought this camera almost 3 years ago for the pockatable 18X optical zoom. My previous camera only had a 10X zoom. It is fast, the image stabiliser works well and image quality is acceptable when in focus. The LCD screen is excellent. The big and I mean very big problem is the focus. IQ is irrelevant if the photo is out off focus! There are two situations where this camera has problems focusing. First outside at long distances with the zoom above 10X.
Excerpt: I asked for a "simple" camera with video capabilities after our first son was born. My parents went above and beyond and bought this camera for us. No matter how hard I try I cannot seem to find a basic setting for everyday pictures. I am constantly missing great moments trying to find the right setting. Active toddlers and pets are blurry - particularly if they're in the same shot.
Summary: 1- Camera has always taken terrible pictures. a- They are slightly blurry and fuzzy. b- Even to get it to that point, you have to hold your breath and hold *perfectly* still for three seconds. c- Lighting has to be absolutely perfect (rare). d- On auto mode the pics are crap. e- Even if you mess with all the settings for each individual shot (who wants to waste time with that??), they are still bad. f- Back lighting or low light are huge problems.
Pros: 1. It was cheaper than most pocket zooms (but for a reason) 2. Quite a brick in the hand - felt solid 3. Fast "on". 4. Menu system better than average. 5. Pretty screen - but it didn't help see image flaws.
Cons: 1. Excessive, destructive noise reduction. 2. Poor auto-exposure; chooses 1/10s but IS can't handle it. 3. Features like panorama don't work well. 4. Heavy, large, corners too sharp - not a "pocket zoom" 5. IS can't handle 18X; blurry.
Excellent Features Despite Design Flaw Repair Potential

Summary: This item arrived on time and in working condition. PREAMBLE & RELIABILITY: I purchased this camera knowing full well the 50/50 chance that I was plunking down nearly $200 on a very good pocket megazoom or a paper weight. The review I found at PCWorld.com of the top 10 pocket megazooms was glowing by virtue of the features packed into it for the price.
Summary: This is my second 9100. I gave my first one to my wife because of the quality of pictures and ease of use. As for Amazon it is by far the best to order items on line. My only complaint is that some of the companies linked to Amazon charge a fairly high handling charge for very small items. Amazon the main company is outstanding.
