Summary: After extensive reviews research, I purchased what I thought would be the ideal camera for me. It worked well in the beginning, but after the one-year warranty (of course) it began to have issues. The menu button worked only occasionally. And finally the lens would no longer focus or retract, citing a "lens error". I'm out over $200 for a camera I bought last year. This is unacceptable.
Summary: This camera seemed like a good purchase until the lens cover stopped opening/closing and the camera was inoperable. I got it fixed - covered by warranty as it was only 6 months old. It worked for about 2 outings and then the same thing happened. The other disappointment is that the pop-up flash is right where you hold the camera so often times the photo needs to be retaken while holding the camera in an awkward manner. Im sure there are better options.
Summary: I have read all the reviews of cameras in this category on Amazon and others like CNET and Digital Photography review to name a couple. I even tried many at the stores. Previously I owned a Canon, and I liked it, but thought I'd look at the competition. I had it narrowed down to the Canon SX230 (disliked the feel and the widescreen), Sony HX7V, Nikon s9100 and Nikon s8200.
Excerpt: I recently bought the S8200 and wanted to share some first impressions. So far, I only took pictures on dim winter days and indoor, thus I cannot give a substantiated assessment of image quality. What I can tell from my images so far, the S8200 is not better or worse in image quality compared to the samples of HX9, SX230, or TZ-10 provided on dpreview. On the usability side, there are some annoyances that I want to share.
Summary: I purchased the S8200 as a Christmas gift to myself intending to use it during the Christmas holidays. I found the picture quality, ease of operation, video quality and sound quality all to be very satisfactory for a simple point and shoot camera at that price point. However it really has an overall "in hand" feel that is cheap. Not what you expect from a Nikon.
Summary: The picture qualities were ok but I did not like the design, the feel, the size and the sound it made when the button was pressed. I returned the item. The service of Amazon was great and I received the refund very quickly without any problems at all. Thank you.
Summary: I purchased this camera with a view to giving it to my Fiancee. It is a bit weighty and not as slim as most models but still had great picture quality and was relatively easy to use (for the one day I had it). The pop up flash is a great idea BUT, it happens to pop up where most people hold the camera on the top left hand side therefore will catch you by surprise should you have it on "AUTO" and it pops up as you are about to take a picture.
Excerpt: I own two other Nikons, a D300 and a D40 and the point of this purchase was to replace our now dead casio pocket camera. I wanted a good zoom, it had to be small, with reasonable video and good picture quality. Ideally good in poor light too. The size is good, not the smallest pocket camera but still small enough to take anywhere and not notice. The zoom is great and I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality on max zoom in, it's stabilised too.
Pros: Small, great stabilized zoom, solid
Cons: Grainy pictures, video docus, on button difficult, no photo orientation data
Summary: Wollte diese Kamera für meinen Neuseelandaufenthalt.
