Summary: This little camera takes quality pictures and has enough flexibility and features to satisfy most photographers. At times, as the more avid "shooter" in our family, I wish it had a higher zoom, but it's so convenient to carry that my Canon 20-D stays home now more often than not. I do have a gripe with this camera, however. The flash pops up from the top left, a location that seems to beg for a left forefinger when taking a shot.
Excerpt: When it was time to replace our seven year old digital camera, we looked at several different cameras and settled on the Nikon Coolpix s8100. Our biggest complaint about most digital cameras is how quickly they snap the shot. When we tested it in the store it had the best response for that was in our price range. The controls are very simple and has several different presets. The aout feature works great and really takes some nice shots.
Summary: Being a Nikon DSLR owner, I wanted a small camera for my pocket and all the research/blogs/reviews brought me to this camera. I wasn't prepared for how light and smooth the camera would be. Needless to say, and much to my "I knew better", I charged it and turned it on without first using the wrist strap. The moment I turned it on, I dropped it...onto my hardwood floor and damaged the extended lens beyond repair.
Summary: I bought this camera about 6 months ago to have something more portable then my D-SLR, and it has went beyond my expectations for a point and shoot camera. This camera has survived 6 months in the harsh desert environment of Afghanistan, even survived getting blown up without any problems.
Excerpt: This is my first P&S purchase in a few years and I wanted something with a longer zoom than my Fuji E550 (4x) which has been an excellent and fast shooter for 5 years. Start-up time and shot to shot speed are very good but nothing I've had my hands on is as fast as the ol' E550. This is the fastest camera though with the med. long zoom (10x) that I could find for $150.00 Having HD video, image stab. and excellent build quality sealed the deal.
"Fantastic for both point&shoot and more advanced photos"
17 November 2011
Pros: The night portrait and night landscape shooting modes work surprisingly well. Great auto mode for when you are in a hurry. Good advanced shooting options for when you want to take your time and make all of the setting decisions yourself.
Cons: Very awkward flash placement. It is way too easy to block the flash from popping up without even knowing it. Sometimes the auto shooting functions can be a little frustrating. Shifting through modes can be confusing at first.
Summary: I'm definitely not a professional photographer, people have however told me I take nice photos and they have gotten nicer since I started using my s8100. it is easy to use & has more features than I will ever use. It has a nice zoom for a camera it's size and will fit in your pocket. Has several burst modes & an awesome macro mode that takes sharp crisp photos with the lens nearly setting on the subject. Constuction and durability seems nice.
