Summary: I took this camera with me on a 3 month trip and was really impressed by the battery life. I was terribly negligent about plugging it in but I was still able to take hundreds of pictures with no problem! It spent most of the trip in a soft case in my pocket without getting damaged. Having 5x zoom instead of the standard 3x puts it a step above most point and click digital cameras in terms of picture quality since you can zoom farther before getting graininess.
Summary: This camera can power on and take a picture in 1 second, but if you don't take it right away you have to wait about 5 seconds. I'm happy with the camera's portability and quality, but would like it to take pictures in faster intervals (about 1-2 seconds between shots).
Summary: I picked up the Nikon S640 as a throw away camera that I would carry everywhere especially where my DSLR is too bulky/heavy and I am not on a photo job assignment. My philosophy regarding cameras is located here and I will not repeat it (at [...] and select "equipment" from the home page). I will start with my negative points.
Summary: I have been looking for a compact all around point and shoot camera for awhile now. I have used multiple cameras in the last few months, and I think I have found my favorite. I'm not an expert in terms of color reproduction, or other details aspects of the final photo, but I don't see much to complain about in terms of photo quality. PROS: Ultra fast focus. This baby can focus and lock on in < 1 sec.
Summary: It's what I wanted, something compact and light that didn't require much set up or fancy footwork to get operational. The features on the camera could be better, I've seen more options and better detail on other camera designs. If your just looking for something that you can have around and use on the go without too much flipping through a user guide this is definitely your type of camera.
Excerpt: I have been an avid Canon and Olympus camera user and finally decided to buy my first Nikon after reading the great reviews of the S640 online before it luanched in the market in Aug 2009. I bought the camera so I would not have to lug my Canon Digital Rebel with me to Paris in order to capture some great evening night shots which I have never been able to do successfully with other pocket digital cameras due to the low ISO speeds.
