Summary: I took this camera with me on a 3 month trip and was really impressed by the battery life. I was terribly negligent about plugging it in but I was still able to take hundreds of pictures with no problem! It spent most of the trip in a soft case in my pocket without getting damaged. Having 5x zoom instead of the standard 3x puts it a step above most point and click digital cameras in terms of picture quality since you can zoom farther before getting graininess.
Excerpt: I like the fact that Nikon’s CoolPixS640 is very easy to use because of its image stabilization function and auto-focus system. Recently I graduated and we all tried to capture a picture of us jumping up in mid-air. The shots turned out great.
Summary: I like this camera for outdoor shots, but indoors, nope. If you zoom in the photos are horrible! grainy and just really bad. I wanted to try a small camera with a decent zoom but this is terrible indoors. it does have a quick response time, and if you don't use it inside much or without the zoom maybe it will work for you. took it back and went back to the larger Canon SX120 b/c I use the zoom and shoot inside, this does that far batter.
Summary: This camera can power on and take a picture in 1 second, but if you don't take it right away you have to wait about 5 seconds. I'm happy with the camera's portability and quality, but would like it to take pictures in faster intervals (about 1-2 seconds between shots).
Summary: I'm a semi-professional photographer who's been using Nikon cameras and products for several years with zero complaints. I purchased this camera to have something more portable for snapshots of friends and family. My faith in Nikon was misplaced and I've found myself sorely wishing that I had gone to a brick and mortar store to test-drive a few small cameras.
Summary: I picked up the Nikon S640 as a throw away camera that I would carry everywhere especially where my DSLR is too bulky/heavy and I am not on a photo job assignment. My philosophy regarding cameras is located here and I will not repeat it (at [...] and select "equipment" from the home page). I will start with my negative points.
Summary: The main camera that is used for a wide range of subjects is my Nikon D70 that I have been using since 2003. The Nikon Coolpix 640 turned out to be my constant companion with a cord attaching around my neck and the camera inserted in my shirt pocket. It can be wide angle for street photography and has a very easy zoom feature adjustment at the shutter release button.
