Conclusion: The Nikon Coolpix S5 is the greatly improved predecessor of the S3. It has 6 megapixels, a large and high-resolution 2.5 inch LCD plus some improved functions. I quite like the new styling and "wave design" of the S5, admittedly much better than the S3's design. The LCD is large, very sharp and the viewing angle is fairly good but visibility was not the best. The mode button plus the rotary dial is much better than that clumsy old mode switch.
Pros: Stylish, Affordable, Large high-resolution 2.5 inch LCD, Not many but still useful scene modes, Rotary dial for quick change of settings, Great ISO performance till ISO 200, VGA 30 FPS movie mode, Enhanced playback functions, Good image quality (for an ultra-thin camera)
Cons: LCD visibility not excellent, Weak flash, So-so battery life, No manual controls, Buffer clearing not fast, Some soft photos and redeye, Video quality is not good, Bad low light performance (High ISO 400 noise, no image stabilization)
Excerpt: Coolpix S5 is an ultra-slim but strong build pocket compact digital camera from Nikon. It features In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, Face Priority AF, and D-Lighting, plus a new One-Touch Portrait button on top of the camera which combines Face Priority AF with In-Camera Red-Eye Fix to help users improve their portraits. Pictmotion allows the adding of music to the pictures and pick a style (Motion, Moody, Classic etc.) for displaying them in slideshow playback.
Excerpt: The "S" for style Nikon Coolpix S5 is a 6 megapixel digital camera with a large 2.5" LCD screen and a 3X optical zoom. It's a fashionably thin compact digital camera that is sort of reminiscent of the classy little Contax T film camera. The Contax T (introduced in 1984) was designed by F. A. Porsche and achieved cult status among serious photographers almost immediately.
Pros: 2.5" LCD screen, Rotary jog dial is neat, Excellent image quality
Cons: LCD screen is almost useless in bright outdoor light, Below average battery life, The tiny zoom switch is hard to use
Summary: The new COOLPIX S5 and combine high-quality imaging performance with impressive new Pictmotion photo sharing technology. Both the S5 and S6 have sleek, slim wave designs, appealing to users who want their cameras to look as great as the pictures they take. Each camera boasts 6.0 effective megapixels with a 3x Zoom-Nikkor lens and the S6 features built-in WiFi support for wireless image transfers and printing.
Conclusion: The Nikon Coolpix S5 faces some pretty stiff competition in the slimline six megapixel market. Although I have found little to actually put me off this camera I am finding it difficult to come up with reasons why you should buy it in preference to other digital cameras with similar features.
Pros: Help text, Lack of red eye in test shot
Cons: Design causes problem with finger over lens, Short flash range
