Excerpt: Bought this to replace my aging Canon Powershot A540. I needed an affordable camera that has full manual controls and manual focus. I wanted a camera that had better lowlight ability than my Powershot. I was waiting for a second hand G series when I saw this camera on special for about the same price as a second hand G. I like the LCD screen, plenty of detail visible in the pictures. I'm enjoying the extra zoom reach over the Powershot and the fact that it is faster.
Summary: I've had this for six months or so. It's well-made, takes decent pictures (in good light) and I like the interface. But there are more modern cameras with better picture quality in lower light that you should be buying.
Summary: This looked to be a nice alternative to my usual full size DSLR or film cameras, where having one or both of those in tow would not be practical. A recent trip which required only one bag was just such an example. Unfortunately, I realized only once I was 5 hours by donkey to the nearest source of electricity that this camera does not charge via USB.
Summary: The camera comes with a very brief quick start guide and a disk with the manual. However, it does not come with a written manual and a written manual is not available for purchase from Nikon. I am very unhappy about this. Yes, I did print the downloaded manual - all 260 pages of it. The printout is very bulky and difficult to use.
Summary: Great features and a lot of hoopla but even with an Extreme SD card, it takes too long to record so I miss a lot of shots in general everyday life. The SCENE setting only displays only 1 option. If the Coolpix S8000 wrote in RAW, I would trade this one in in a heartbeat. Not a happy camper.
Excerpt: This camera is a fair step down from having used DSLRs for the last seven years. The level of detail from the small sensor, and the ISO noise at even 400 leave a lot to be desired... if you are pixel peeping. For me, this camera has done exactly what I hoped it would do: to capture my life, my travels, sometimes even my dinner in a way that the DSLR never did because more often than not I was leaving the DSLR behind or not bothering to pull it out of its bag to take...
Summary: The cameras end results are stunning and the creative black and white feature pretty much takes any post editing out of the process. It is light and has a good feel in hand. It doesn't feel cheap or that it may break if you handle roughly. It has an aggressive look, that of a good rangefinder. However, the firmware needs to be revamped and it has trouble calculating exposure when using the manual power flash setting.
