Nikon COOLPIX P520

Camera Labs
1 November 2013
  • Summary: The Nikon COOLPIX P520 is a 42x superzoom with an 18.1 Megapixel sensor. It supercedes the 16 Megapixel COOLPIX P510, which is still available. With some exceptions, notably Panasonic, manufacturers tend to update super-zoom lenses every couple of generations and so the COOLPIX P520 and the earlier P510 share the same 4.3-180mm (24-1000mm equivalent) f3-5.9 lens.
  • Pros: Capable 42x optical zoom range., Big, detailed 3.2 in articulated screen., Excellent VR optical stabilisation., Built-in GPS with POI database.
  • Cons: Slow handling and writing to card., Poor battery life., No built-in Wifi., No hot shoe., No RAW mode.

Nikon Coolpix P520: An all-around very good package

CNET
3 June 2013
  • Summary: More point-and-shoot than dSLR in terms of features and performance than some competing high-end megazooms, the Nikon Coolpix P520 is a very good camera for those after a big zoom range, better control over results, and fine picture quality.
  • Cons: Its autofocus system is slow when the lens is zoomed in, especially when compared with other models in its class; battery life is short; and the camera feels cheaply constructed.

Nikon Coolpix P520 review

Pocket Lint
24 May 2013
  • Excerpt: Superzoom cameras tend to be pricey bits of kit these days. Not so for the Nikon Coolpix P520 - this Coolpix sure doesn't hold back on the zoom, yet cuts back on the price compared to many of its competitors. We were already fond of the previous Coolpix, the P510 when we saw it back in 2012 as it demonstrated a push forward from Nikon in the superzoom department. However, we still found it to be a touch behind the competition in almost every area.
  • Pros: Affordable compared to rivals, small body but big and varied zoom range, image stabilisation, full vari-angle LCD, low ISO shots bright and colourful
  • Cons: Tricky to shoot at 1000mm because of feature restraints, autofocus at longer focal lengths is a little slow, no raw, image quality not pushing forward
